Talks about Emacs and/or Plan 9

Hey,

thank you for organizing the last meetup, I had lot's of fun.

While we were chatting after the workshop, we had the idea to do talks about Emacs and Plan 9. I thought that's a great idea and would like to discuss it. Here's what I can contribute:

• Admittedly, Emacs isn't really a Go topic, however I use Emacs for Go development. As an Emacs novice, I am using Doom Emacs and I'd be happy to share how I set that up and work on a project. There are many reasons why I prefer it to more powerful IDEs and I'm sure it's a topic that could be followed by interesting discussions.

• Plan 9 on the other hand is very Go related, some of the members on the Go team worked on Plan 9 at Bell Labs and some of the ideas that they explored can be found in Go today. There are lots of facets to this. If there's interest, we can extend this to include material on the Inferno OS. It's the successor of Plan 9 that took some of it's ideas even further. While Plan 9 is an OS that you have to run on bare metal or in a VM, Inferno OS can be hosted on another OS. I actually managed to compile and run it in Windows 7 many years ago. It's fascinating. To round up a talk with something 'useful' I can genuinely recommend the sam editor of Plan 9. I do actually use it for larger refactoring tasks and like to leverage the structural regular expressions it offers.

I can see myself give one talk on these or something similar if there is interest. Happy to take suggestions.

Would somebody else be interested in giving a talk about this?

Hey! Yeah, I kept thinking about this, too. I’d be happy to prepare an Emacs talk. Maybe you do the Plan 9 one, then? :)

Would be interested to see the Plan9 talk as well. From my cursory browsing of the Plan9 source, I know that a lot of concepts trace their roots all the way back to there; I'd be interested in a talk that traces that back :)

Silly side note, I always liked to imagine that net.Dial is called like that because AT&T is a phone company. Maybe we can find someone who can confirm or deny that theory. ☎️
