• separate branch: ig-metada
• make changes to local forks and PR to ig-metadata branch
• use "Co-authored-by: xyz" template to indicate credits (https://docs.github.com/en/pull-requests/committing-changes-to-your-project/creating-and-editing-commits/creating-a-commit-with-multiple-authors)
• stacked PRs (https://blog.logrocket.com/using-stacked-pull-requests-in-github/)

@riedde will try out this workflow in the next time and give feedback if further adjustments are needed.
