ODD Friday (2019-11-29)

Today, we had a brief meeting as the first iteration of the new series of ODD Fridays, to be held at the last Friday of every odd month. Participants were Morgan Cundiff, Laurent Pugin, Klaus Rettinghaus, Johannes Kepper. We discussed some pull requests and tickets, reviewed the work on the Guidelines and spoke about priorities for the coming months.

  • The Neumes IG Pull Request is a wonderful example on how to submit Pull Requests, given that there are sufficient ressources available. Specifically, making proposed revision of the Guidelines available online makes it very easy to review. We agreed that this PR needs only very little work (double-check that the examples are either valid or explicitly stating they're intentionally not) and a brief review.

  • The PR for @stem.sameas was considered to be "almost" there. With the requested change in the description, it would be ready to be merged, i.e. no changes to the proposed specs are required.

  • We went through all the Guidelines chapters and reviewed the progress that has been made on them. While for some of these chapters (most prominently CMN) a lot of work has been done already, some others are still in the works, and some haven't seen any progress so far. In those cases, Johannes will reach out to the responsible editors and ask if they still plan to work on this, or if others should take over.

  • Considering the fact that there is still no parity between the MEI Guidelines and the schema specs they're documenting, we agreed that our sole priority right now is to revise the Guidelines and make sure they align with the Specs. Only then, we will re-start schema development and accept new features. However, this should not keep us from tracking obvious errors in the Specs, which can be addressed later on. At that point, we will come up with robust workflows that ensure we keep the Guidelines and Specs in sync.

  • We discussed that these meetings should perhaps happen more frequently than every other month, i.e. they should happen every month. We agreed that it might be a good idea to have them alternate between the current Friday setup, and a different week day on the even months between, to facilitate participation for people not available on Fridays. However, the discussion was postponed until January, as an additional meeting in December seemed unlikely to attract a lot of participation.

Thus, the next meeting will be on Friday, January 31st, at 1pm UTC again.

How to organise ODD meetings

  • We'll try GitHub Projects to organise the meetings with "dated" columns for each ODD meeting.
  • @kepper and @bwbohl will prepare the Project and send around a link to the Project
  • Additionally w'll setup a dedicated Slack-Channel in the MEI workspace
