Hello there [NAME OF PERSON]

Joe Burgess & I are planning a full day beginners iOS conference in NYC in on a Friday in late August at the FlatIron School - open to the public. We'd love it if you were involved as a speaker. We've come up with a 3 major topics around which we'd like the talks to be based.

  • If you were starting now, what would you want to know?
  • What makes objective-c a unique language? /. The Story of building my First App?
  • What are you learning about swift now we're all beginners?

If any of these questions resonate with you, and you're interested in speaking, please comment on this issue and we'll keep everyone in the loop. If it's not up your alley, feel free to unsubscribe and either comment or let one of us know privately,

@orta I'm happy to participate. I don't have any great talk ideas but I'm sure I can come up with something that falls within the bounds of what you're asking for, especially if it's only 20 minutes and not until the end of August.

I kinda really suck at design but here is a first stab. We need a proper name. Also it just generally needs work to look reasonable. Not shooting for anything incredibly beautiful...but it should be workable! Github repo at jmburges/beginner-ios-conf-website

Cool @irace - I think the questions are vague enough to allow for a lot of wiggle room.

@jmburges - I was thinking about Swift.start() as a name earlier? I can fork this and make it work. 👍

Made some changes. http://jmburges.github.io/beginner-ios-conf-website/

  • I talked to @ebjacobs and she said if we make it $30 we can provide breakfast and lunch and all that so I upped it to $30...I don't think people will mind.
  • Added a new topic that I would love to hear about "How do we maintain the great parts of Objective-C in Swift?".
  • Also updated the tag line so that we don't scare away existing obj-c devs. "A One Day Conference for
    developers new to Swift"
  • The Legal stuff is kinda hilarious....Do we want to just link them directly to Flatiron's Code of Conduct?
    • Also aswiftstart.com is available so buying that bad boy. As soon as the dns and all that goes through I'll link up the site to github and unpassword protect the eventbrite.

@orta so I was definitely thinking more along 1 and 2 and here's what i came up with: Cocoa Design Patterns

Basically thinking of giving an intro on 3 design patterns that can be used to do the same-ish things for pub-sub-ish reasons

  • NotificationCenter
  • KVO
  • Delegates (implementing a delegate protocol and using it)

Definitely things I wish I knew more about when i was starting and I think definitely makes Objective-C unique, multiple interesting ways/patterns to achieve similar things.

I think this is around 15-20 minutes. What do you think? Open to other suggestions.

So.

Thanks everyone.

This was a really cool experience, I think as a collective you inspired and lighted the imaginations of our audience. Every person I spoke to was extremely impressed by the speakers and hoped there would be another. I know I've come out of it with a lot more than I put in.

I've written my write up on my blog, rebase.

That said, I'm a little bit sad to hit the close and comment button below. I need to grab some beers with Joe at some point, but maybe this is something we can repeat, if it is I'd like you lot to think about who you think might be a good speaker on a similar theme.
