Curved connections are used only for mode transitions. Curved connections have the following problems:

Difficult to layout. There are additional complications with the upcoming implementation of enhanced layout.
Associated with the graphical representation of the business object.
Not customization by the user. Setting control points is not currently supported.

Because of these issues, the plan is to remove curved connections until they can be better supported. Proper support should allow:

Customizing control points
Setting the style of any connection to curved.
Proper automatic layout.
