Like those on Wikipedia, but without useless numbers, just an asterisk linking to whatever it links to, e.g.:

He said that I'm stupid in 1998. \a[http://example.com/mysource]{ref}

renders as:

He said that I'm stupid in 1998. <a href="http://example.com/mysource">*</a>
