Steps to reproduce

  1. Enable external storage app
  2. Enable SMB / CIFS with OC Login as external storage option
  3. Add external storage with Folder name: "Home Folder", Host: "bcgs-vm-fs4", Share: "student-folders", Remote subfolder: "$user".

(The above is identical to ownCloud 7.0.4 configuration that we currently have in production.)

Expected behaviour

"Home Folder" directory in external storage section is populated with the user's home directory contents.

Actual behaviour

When clicking on "Home Folder" in the external storage section, it just swings back to the root folder.

Negative. I have modified the smb.conf and changed "workgroup = WORKGROUP" to "workgroup = NETBIOS_DOMAIN_NAME".

I do not have authentication errors. Capturing traffic on the file server with wireshark shows that authentication is successful.

Still, it is just looping me back to the root folder.

Additionally, I actually see no errors in the owncloud log relating to this, even with debug logging on.

Please note the mount.json file is identical to our 7.0.4 production system.

Further information:

I can connect to the SMB shared with the smbclient, list directories, navigate into sub directories, etc.

I notice in the packet capture on the file server an error "NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND"

I can connect to the SMB shared with the smbclient, list directories, navigate into sub directories, etc.

I notice in the packet capture on the file server an error "NT_STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND"

Yes I can... although that's probably on account of the workgroup setting that I've changed in smb.conf?

What server are you connecting to? Active Directory, NT4 file server, Samba etc?

We really need a way to specify the domain in the configuration for SMB and/or SMB-OC...

Further information:

I've managed to get the home folder mounted now by using our dfs namespace. Using the direct server name and share name still does not work at all. The problem now is that I can see the contents of the home folder, but cannot browse into any of the folders.

I can assure you that all permissions are correct etc, as the same SMB server is currently being used in production with OC 7.0.4.

Authentication (sending the domain name through) is not the issue. At least not for us. We just modify smb.conf and it works fine.

Perhaps your problem is related to this smbclient bug? That only applies for the DFS test though... the root cause is still undetermined.

@icewind1991 Any ideas?

I did an upgrade from OC 8.04 to 8.1 and although not very smooth eventually almost everything has worked out. However, the external storage, specifically has an issue on both the upgrades I did. CentOS6.6/PHP 5.4 and CentOS 7/PHP 5.5 both experience the same exact problem. The shared directories fail (won't mount) if they are more than one directory down from the shared directory.

Both of these servers were running perfectly prior to the upgrade but both fail and will not mount. The attached screen grab pretty much explains the problem. Green Light - Red Light! LOL

I have not seen this specific issue posted anywhere but the one above is close. We use the OC as a interface to share various files on different servers on our network. It works great and is a very useful tool.

Thank OC Dev Team!

I can mount shares and noted in my example above. Most of the shares are on Buffalo_Tech NAS devices on the LAN and a very few are Windows 7 Pro. In my case as you can see, the mount is limited to the "root" shared directory drilling down even one more directory fails and will not mount.

This worked extremely well with no issue prior to the upgrade to 8.1... it has worked back to version 4.5 when I started up the 1st ownCloud. There really was no reason to upgrade except to increase performance. I should have mentioned there were 2 other errors reporting in the Admin menu on BOTH systems but they seem to work fine:

  • This server has no working Internet connection. This means that some of the features like mounting external storage, notifications about updates or installation of third-party apps will not work. Accessing files remotely and sending of notification emails might not work, either. We suggest to enable Internet connection for this server if you want to have all features.

The Internet is connected and works fine on the LAN and from the WAN. I will play with the memcache once this pesky mounting problem is solved. One thing at a time...so I don't break things worse.

Hi Devs,

I'm shelving the upgrade to 8.1 for the moment.

I'm more than happy to work with you, though, to get to the bottom of this - happy to do some testing, provide logs, etc.

Please let me know if you need anything further from me.

Regards,
Gavin

fwiw just trying out this as new functionality, but this pops up along the way - might be that (at least in our case) the user doesn't get expanded correctly? the log really says smb::foo

We are have same problem, don't work a samba after update for OC 8.1. If I'm try smbclient -U polter%password \myWin2012\ it's work. From OC on tcpdump "Error: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND" . We try rebuild ldap configs, change servers and from Windows 2003 it can connect.

@kaeser-sosae better use this OC 8.1 patch instead: https://github.com/owncloud/core/pull/18397.patch

You need to add -p1 in the CLI, so it becomes:
patch -p1 --dry-run < 18397.patch

@PVince81 I've tried that. Here is my command:

pic1

And this is what I'm prompted with:

pic2

I'm still having the delete issue with 8.1.1. I'm using aptitude for the install of ownCloud, is this why the patch command isn't working? Do I need to be using git for this to work?

If so, is there another way I could patch it to see if this fix works for me?

Thanks heaps!

Still seeing same delete issue with 8.2.2... any further thoughts?

Folders are deleted correctly when the Sync Client is used, but not through the web interface.

This has been preventing us from updating since August 2015. Surely we're doing something simple wrong, or there's a bug with the interface?

There must be others out there running SMB on Server 2012 as external storage - surely they'd be complaining?

Files_external app is the same in community or enterprise version.

Maybe the problem is because it is necessary to do an extra set up in the LDAP configuration.

  • In the LDAP configuration, in the expert tab, fill "Internal Username Attribute" with "sAMAccountName"
    1

Note: This config is for Active Directory. Is possible that the parameter will be different if you are using other LDAP implementations. (uid with openldap)

That value is what is stored in $user variable and use it to do login against your SMB/CIFS server.

It's concerning to me that there seems to be minimal interest on this issue?

I've installed owncloud over and over again and having the same issues.

I have also commented on issue 20750 which seems related, and because one person says "cannot replicate" all action has stopped.

I wonder whether someone would be more interesting in seeing some logs or investigating this fairly major issue?

Thing is - there is no clear problem which can be reproduced, giving a bug to fix for a developer. If you can't analyze the problem to the point where we have something clear to fix (rather than the rest of the infrastructure being at fault) there's not much we can do. Well, sure, you could get more tips, thoughts and ideas on how to fix it but remember this is a volunteer project and if nobody feels like helping, what can you do? The only other option is to find somebody who you can pay to fix the issue, either, owncloud Inc or a consultant, see https://owncloud.org/consultants

Disappointing that we can't upgrade from 7.0.4 to the latest. This is not sustainable for us, so we will have to abandon the project and potentially revisit sometime in the future. Seems a waste of someone's hard work. I'll close this issue off.

Hello,
The CentOS 6.5 & 7 (two systems with the same issues) both running PHP
5.6 & OC 8.2.2 (stable) and ever since moving to 8.x there have been
SMB issues. I have managed done work around for most of the issues
except two and I suspect they are related. I when assessing the SMC
share the directory listing is not updated. The directory list of files
and directories is only updated IF created and files uploaded through
OC. If the files and directories are changed in or on the SMB share by
another source they are "invisible". Editing/saving and deleting the
files or directories that were present but not created by OC is a
problem. Even files created with OC would have probems; For instance
editing a text file it would save the very first time and then not save
again and would error. If you tried to delete it sometimes it would and
other times it would not delete the file. I played around by updating
the running php scan but it helped list most of the files bit I needed
to significantly increase the size of the memory limit in etc/php.conf
for the scan to complete. But it really did not fix the problem:
(Original)
; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (128MB)
;memory_limit = 128M
(Modified)
; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume (8192MB)
memory_limit = 8192M

I am not running any mem_cache yet as I wanted to fix the problems
before I added more variables. Mind you both systems worked perfectly
with no issues in version 7.x. No SMB issues at all.. no text editor
issues life was good!

Simple listing of the SMB shares issues:
Shares - Files & Directory listing in OC not unpdating
Shares - Text editor not saving files as expected
Shares - Unable to delete some files on SMB shares
Shares - Unable to create SMB shares below main remote shared directory:
\shared (shares ok)
\shared\notes\ (no good)

All these issues surfaced when upgrading from OC 7.x to 8.x. As noted
all worked perfectly as expected in OC ver 7.x and previous versions.

Hello,
we have the same issue. Our ownloud instance is primary used as front end to our fileserver. The Files were edited and updated with SMC shares. There are sometimes complaints from users not seeing all files and folders, which were edited. This seams to apply only to some users while other users can view the files.
I notice this is a cache only problem. By truncate the oc_filecache table the Files displayed correct.
I use a shell script, which truncate the oc_filecache table every night. I know this is ony a workaround, but it ensure the correct filelisting for alle our users. Our owncloud instance is up to date, Version. 8.2.2

@htwsaaraub never truncate the oc_filecache table, it will make users lose shares, favorite flag, etc.
If people are changing files on the SMB storage without going through ownCloud, then you need a cron job that runs "occ files:scan --all" to force-rescan the remote storages for changes in deeper folders.

This has nothing to do with this issue's description, and is more related to update detection: #11797
