Either a modification to the portal source files or a portal module would be awesome.

https://github.com/board3/Board3-Portal/wiki/%5BHow-To%5D-Create-a-module-for-Board3-Portal-2.1.x

Looks like there's documentation for how to do this now. If I have time, I may play with it.

I have an experimental way of doing this, but it makes the portal required. I'm not sure how to make it optional. If you're interested, I can post the code, but it needs a lot of work.

Having a hard requirement on the portal is simply a no-go

That's what I expected. I was hoping you had a better idea than what I came up with. I don't usually do PHP work, so someone who actually knows what they're doing might have a way around that hard requirement.

This is what I have so far:
https://gist.github.com/belak/3ae5480490c7e9542653

Most of it is boilerplate for the portal module, and a small portion of it is copied from the event handler (where we actually grab the template vars). Any suggestions or improvements would be welcome.
