@Poincare

No offense here, but, the splatter of colors really doesn't look very pleasing; atleast to me and several others I know of.

If you guys agree, I can definitely try to make it look better with a monochromatic color scheme, smooth background and bright buttons and such.

I like Camelia.

@Poincare

Nothing's wrong with Camelia! In fact, I think the butterfly's a great mascot. I'm saying that the overall "design" of the page is sort of weird and not fitting, atleast to my eyes.

I have no problems with the current design. It's colourful and vibrant, kinda like the Perl 6 community itself. That said, if you want to make a mockup, go for it, and I'm sure you'll get plenty of feedback from the aforementioned community. :-)

@Poincare

Sure, I'll do a mockup.

Any progress on mockup?

@Poincare

This had completely slipped out of my mind. Here it is: http://ge.tt/4ich05L/v/0

It is a PNG since I don't think all of you will have Photoshop.

I do not think that current Perl 6 site looks ugly (Python is the rock bottom of ugliness in my private ranking)
but it is _too childish_ for sure.

Language has to be presented as a _trustworthy_ tool - so people are willing to bet their data, reputation and money on it. Perl 5 reached this goal, but Perl 6 design makes language with 10 years of development look less mature than LEGO MindStrom for kids.

Spokesbug? Kill it with fire :)

Poincare: I like the bottom half of your mockup, but the top half has some issues in readability and usability.

Please consider that the website should be usable for people with varying degrees of vision, and on a wide range of devices.

You're very very close to something that I really like the look of.

(I'm not quite all of the Perl 6 community, so I'll just goodmouth your mockup instead.)

Camelia is the Perl 6 logo, and the official Perl 6 site will continue to show it. That part is not negotiable. See also http://perl6.org/about/

If you come up with a less colorful design that still includes Camelia, and that looks better than the current one, I'm open to that.

Sorry, I don't see the mockup being "better" than the current design. It looks like one of those pre-canned templates that comes with blog apps. The current site may not be perfect, but it's at least unique. Which seems appropriate, since Perl 6 itself, is unique.

One thing I think could use adjusting is the big blue shiny "download" button on the front page. The color shade and shininess of the button don't seem to go with the rest of the page. Also, the font used in it strikes me as a bit odd for some reason.

We've had some very insightful feedback on IRC, here's the link: http://irclog.perlgeek.de/perl6/2012-08-11#i_5890961

Let me quote the core issue, IMHO: Plus which, the design goal does not fit the functionality: The function (on the front page) is a link farm, the design goal is fun and getting-to-know

I'd call it "link collection" instead of "link farm", but I agree with the key observation.
Any redesign attempts would do well to take that into account.

Looks like the original request here didn't get enough traction to get applied. Closing this 2+ year old ticket; I still think changes to the design are possible, but this one didn't make it.

Thanks for trying to help the community.
