.gitignore is not for storing YourEditor™ temponary files, that should be in global .gitignore. Read more about this git feature at https://help.github.com/articles/ignoring-files.

I thought that it's legit here, because it appears in rakudo's .gitignore.

I've no idea why Rakudo has *~ in .gitignore. But, I've feeling it's bad idea - what if next year somebody will ask to add .*.bak (after all, *~ would be there, so why not .*.bak)? You would have noise of backup extensions - .gitignore is for what your project might generate, not what your editor might.

I've removed *~ from Rakudo's .gitignore; it's apparently left over from our very early days of setting up Rakudo's git repository.
