In the case of Chrome, itâ€™s an even more interesting challenge as we contend with a codebase that evolves at a blisteringly fast pace. All of this means that we need to move very quickly to keep up, and one of the ways we do so is with a scaled out \u003ca href\u003d\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuzz_testing\"\u003efuzzing\u003c/a\u003e infrastructure.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eChromeâ€™s fuzzing infrastructure (affectionately named \"ClusterFuzz\") is built on top of a cluster of several hundred virtual machines running approximately six-thousand simultaneous Chrome instances. ClusterFuzz automatically grabs the most current Chrome \u003ca href\u003d\"http://dev.chromium.org/developers/how-tos/get-the-code#TOC-LKGR\"\u003eLKGR (Last Known Good Revision)\u003c/a\u003e, and hammers away at it to the tune of around fifty-million test cases a day. That capacity has roughly quadrupled since the systemâ€™s inception, and we plan to quadruple it again over the next few weeks.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eWith that kind of volume, weâ€™d be overloaded if we just automated the test case generation and crash detection. Thatâ€™s why weâ€™ve automated the entire fuzzing pipeline, including the following processes:\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eManaging test cases and infrastructure\u003c/b\u003e - To run at maximum capacity we need to generate a constant stream of test cases, distribute them across thousands of Chrome instances running on hundreds of virtual machines, and track the results.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eAnalyzing crashes\u003c/b\u003e - The only crashes we care about for security purposes are the exploitable ones. So we use \u003ca href\u003d\"http://code.google.com/p/address-sanitizer/\"\u003eAddress Sanitizer\u003c/a\u003e to instrument our Chrome binaries and provide detailed reports on potentially exploitable crashes.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eMinimizing test cases\u003c/b\u003e - Fuzzer test cases are often very large filesâ€”usually as much as several hundred kilobytes each. So we take the generated test cases and distill them down to the few, essential pieces that actually trigger the crash.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eIdentifying regressions\u003c/b\u003e - The first step in getting a crash fixed is figuring out where it is and who should fix it. So this phase tracks the crash down to the range of changes that introduced it.\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003e\u003cb\u003eVerifying fixes\u003c/b\u003e - In order to verify when a crash is actually fixed, which we run the open crash cases against each new LKGR build.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eIn addition to manageability, this level of scale and automation provides a very important additional benefit. By aggressively tracking the Chrome LKGR builds, ClusterFuzz is evolving into a real-time security regression detection capability. To appreciate just what that means, consider that ClusterFuzz has detected 95 unique vulnerabilities since we brought it fully online at the end of last year. In that time, 44 of those vulnerabilities were identified and fixed before they ever had a chance to make it out to a stable release. As we further refine our process and increase our scale, we expect potential security regressions in stable releases to become increasingly less common.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eJust like Chrome itself, our fuzzing work is constantly evolving and pushing the state of the art in both scale and techniques. This new version adds \u003ca href\u003d\"http://nerget.com/fluidSim/\"\u003eOliver Huntâ€™s\u003c/a\u003e 2D \u003ca href\u003d\"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navier%E2%80%93Stokes_equations\"\u003eNavier-Stokes\u003c/a\u003e fluid dynamic simulation, which stresses intense double array computations. +               "$t":"Security is one of our core values, alongside speed, stability and simplicity.  From day one, weâ€™ve designed Chromeâ€™s extension system \u003ca href\u003d\"http://blog.chromium.org/2009/12/security-in-depth-extension-system.html\"\u003ewith security in mind\u003c/a\u003e.  Since we launched the extension system, the state of the art in web security has advanced with technologies like \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.w3.org/TR/CSP/\"\u003eContent-Security-Policy\u003c/a\u003e (CSP). Extension developers have been able to \u003ca href\u003d\"http://blog.chromium.org/2011/07/writing-extensions-more-securely.html\"\u003eopt into these features\u003c/a\u003e, and now weâ€™re enabling these security features by default.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eUnfortunately, securing extensions with CSP by default is incompatible with the legacy extension system.  Weâ€™re passionate about extension compatibility, so weâ€™re going to make this change gradually to minimize pain for users and developers.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eUsers can continue to install extensions that are available in the store regardless of whether they are secured with CSP or not. This means they will not lose any of the functionality they've added to Chrome.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eDevelopers will be able to choose when to enable the new behavior. To ease the transition, we've introduced a new manifest version attribute in the extension manifest in Chrome 18 (currently in beta). However, since then, the storeâ€™s app inventory has grown and changed in composition. So, yesterday we made important changes in the Chrome Web Storeâ€™s app category system to allow more great apps of all kinds to stand out.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eUntil now, you could list your app into two categories. With the new category structure, we will show your app only in the primary category that you select for your app in the \u003ca href\u003d\"https://chrome.google.com/webstore/developer/dashboard\"\u003edeveloper dashboard\u003c/a\u003e. You can go to \u003ccode\u003echrome://gpu\u003c/code\u003e to see which features are being accelerated. This is a tricky area to optimize, due to the wide variety of hardware and operating system configurations found in the wild. Weâ€™ve made a series of small improvements to the way this acceleration works in the latest release, and we're seeking feedback on it from our Beta users. +               "$t":"Itâ€™s hard for us to believe, but itâ€™s been just over two years since we \u003ca href\u003d\"http://blog.chromium.org/2010/01/encouraging-more-chromium-security.html\"\u003efirst announced\u003c/a\u003e the Chromium Security Rewards Program.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eWeâ€™ve been delighted with the programâ€™s success; weâ€™ve issued \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.chromium.org/Home/chromium-security/hall-of-fame\"\u003ewell over $300,000 of rewards\u003c/a\u003e across hundreds of qualifying bugs, all of which we promptly fixed. It also helped inspire a wave of similar efforts from companies across the web, including Googleâ€™s own \u003ca href\u003d\"http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2010/11/rewarding-web-application-security.html\"\u003evulnerability reward program\u003c/a\u003e for web properties, which has also been \u003clink\u003e\u003c/link\u003e\u003ca href\u003d\"http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.com/2012/02/celebrating-one-year-of-web.html\"\u003ea big hit\u003c/a\u003e.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eWeâ€™ve been fascinated by the variety and ingenuity of bugs submitted by dozens of researchers. Weâ€™ve received bugs in roughly every component, ranging from system software (Windows kernel / Mac OS X graphics libraries / GNU libc) to Chromium / WebKit code and to popular open source libraries (libxml, ffmpeg). Chromium is a more stable and robust browser thanks to the efforts of the wider security community.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eToday weâ€™re expanding the scope of the Chromium program to formally include more items that deserve recognition:\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eHigh-severity Chromium OS security bugs are now in scope. Chromium OS includes much more than just the Chromium browser, so weâ€™re rewarding security bugs across the whole system, as long as they are high severity and present when â€œdeveloper modeâ€ is switched off. Examples of issues that may generate a reward could include (but are not limited to):\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eRenderer sandbox escapes via Linux kernel bugs.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eMemory corruptions or cross-origin issues inside the Pepper Flash plug-in.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eSerious cross-origin or memory corruption issues in default-installed apps, extensions or plug-ins.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eViolations of the verified boot path.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003cli\u003eWeb- or network-reachable vulnerabilities in system libraries, daemons or drivers.\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\u003c/ul\u003eChromium OS security bugs should be reported in the \u003ca href\u003d\"https://code.google.com/p/chromium-os/issues/entry?template\u003dSecurity%20Bug\"\u003eChromium OS bug tracker\u003c/a\u003e, whilst security bugs affecting the desktop Chromium browser should be reported in the \u003ca href\u003d\"https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/entry?template\u003dSecurity%20Bug\"\u003eChromium bug tracker\u003c/a\u003e.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eWe may elect to issue â€œbonusesâ€ ranging from $500 to $1000 if a bug reporter takes on fixing the bug they have found themselves. For eligibility, this process involves working with the Chromium community to produce a peer reviewed patch. These bonuses are granted on top of the base reward, which typically runs between $500 and $3133.70.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003e\u003cul\u003e\u003cli\u003eThe base reward for a well-reported and significant cross-origin bug (for example a so-called UXSS or â€œUniversal XSSâ€) is now $2000.\u0026nbsp;\u003c/li\u003e\u003c/ul\u003ePerhaps most importantly, this program reflects several of our \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.chromium.org/Home/chromium-security/core-principles\"\u003ecore security principles\u003c/a\u003e: engaging the community, building defense in depth, and particularly making the web safer for everyone.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eRelated to this third core principle, weâ€™re particularly excited by all the work that has been done on shared components. One of Chromeâ€™s most advanced security features, \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/more/security.html\"\u003eSafe Browsing\u003c/a\u003e, helps protect against the three most common threats on the web: phishing, drive-by malware, and harmful downloads. We \u003ca href\u003d\"http://chrome.blogspot.com/2012/01/speed-and-security.html\"\u003erecently announced\u003c/a\u003e some new enhancements to Safe Browsing, so we thought weâ€™d offer an inside look into how it works.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eSafe Browsing downloads a continuously-updated list of known phishing and malware websites, generated by an automated analysis of our entire web index. Each page you visit, and each resource (such as pictures and scripts) on the page, are checked against these lists. This is done in a way that does not reveal the websites you visit, and is described in more detail in our \u003ca href\u003d\"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v\u003dNR_E_B8k-cI\"\u003evideo on Safe Browsing\u003c/a\u003e. To provide better protection, Safe Browsing has two additional mechanisms that can detect phishing attacks and harmful downloads the system has never encountered before.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003ePhishing attacks are often only active for a few short hours, so itâ€™s especially important to detect new attacks as they happen. Chrome now analyzes properties of each page you visit to determine the likelihood of it being a phishing page. This is done locally on your computer, and doesnâ€™t share the websites you visit with Google. Only if the page looks sufficiently suspicious will Chrome send the URL of that page back to Google for further analysis, and show a warning as appropriate.\u003cbr /\u003e\u003cbr /\u003eMalicious downloads are especially tricky to detect since theyâ€™re often posted on rapidly changing URLs and are even â€œre-packedâ€ to fool anti-virus programs. Chrome helps counter this behavior by checking executable downloads against a list of known good files and publishers. If a file isnâ€™t from a known source, Chrome sends the URL and IP of the host and other meta data, such as the fileâ€™s hash and binary size, to Google. The file is automatically classified using machine learning analysis and the reputation and trustworthiness of files previously seen from the same publisher and website. For example, thanks to SPDY, a significant percentage of Chrome users saw a decrease in search latency when we launched SSL-search.
