NAME

debnorepo - find installed Debian packages without repository

SYNOPSIS

debnorepo [OPTION]...

DESCRIPTION

debnorepo lists packages that are installed but are not found in any remote APT repositories (http or ftp method). This could mean that the package has been removed, or that the package should be upgraded but your APT configuration prevents an automatic upgrade, a typical situation with packages from experimental. Using apt-cache policy is a way to analyze the situation.

A legitimate exception is that you installed the package directly and it is not supposed to be in any repository. You can prevent such packages from being listed by debnorepo by giving them a positive pin priority. That means putting something like this into /etc/apt/preferences:

Explanation: override debnorepo
Package: my-local-package
Pin: version *
Pin-Priority: 1

OPTIONS

-U, --include-available-upgrades

Normally, packages that have available upgrades are not listed. This option includes them.

-N, --nagios

Produce Nagios-compatible output.

--help

Print out usage information.

RETURN VALUE

0 if no packages without repository were found, 1 if such packages were found, 3 in case of any other kind of error. (This includes the Nagios mode, where 1 means warning and 3 means unknown.)

NOTES

It can be useful to call debnorepo automatically after calls to dpkg. You can add something like the following to apt.conf:

Dpkg::Post-Invoke { "debnorepo"; };
