I'm seeing similar numbers under Node 0.8.8. It looks like msgpack is faster, but JSON parse() and stringify() are much faster, but perhaps for artificial reasons. There have been significant performance improvements in Node and V8, but these results seem out of proportion.

Anyone have an explanation?

I'm currently considering msgpack for some semi-structured messages to and from Lua scripts in Redis 2.6. It imports cjson and cmsgpack, so my choices are between msgpack and plain JSON. These results make me lean towards JSON.
