@hbrothers

Using on new MacBook Pro. It seems the only way to record is to select WavTap for both Input and Output in system sound preferences. This means no ability to monitor. Is this OS 10.8 deliberately thwarting your fine work and the ability to freely record on my hard-earned hardware?

Thanks for all your work!

Yes.

It seems the only way to record is to select WavTap for both Input and Output in system sound preferences.

The way WavTap is designed, you never have to (also you can't) configure anything. It tries really hard to maintain the illusion of being a transparent layer over your preexisting audio config.
When you launch WavTap, it:

  • notes your current output device,
  • designates WavTap as the system output device, and
  • routes the output of your previous output device to WavTap's input

(And on quit, it just does that process in reverse.) Hope that helps.
