gdcFileUploader is a PHP5 class library that offers a very easy, yet powerful way to handle uploading of files submitted via a HTML form.
You can easily just upload all files with only a few lines of code OR you can (also easily) setup powerful rules to restrict uploading and specify uploading parameters.
Of course you are offered a bunch of detailed information about every single submitted file.
In addition gdcFileUploader takes care of error handling and doesn’t bother you with any of this. Except, of course, you wish to.


Below I describe various ways to use the class. For the complete API reference see the documentation.

Simple Uploading

If you just want to save all submitted files to the server then have a look at the following snippet.
It won’t get any easier.

    $uploader = new gdcFileUploader('.');
    try {
    } catch (gdcFileUploaderException $e) {}

So, what happens here?
First a new instance of gdcFileUploader is created by passing the upload directory to the constructor.
Then the saveAllFiles() method is called which saves all files that were submitted successfully.
This method call is wrapped in a try-catch-block because it throws an exception in case anything goes wrong.

The saveAllFiles() method takes two optional arguments. The first one is the upload directory. The second is a PHP Callable. It will be explained in the next section.

Advanced Uploading

First of all I’ll show you a different way to upload your files and then I will explain the second argument of the saveAllFiles() method.

    $uploader = new gdcFileUploader('.');
    foreach ($uploader->getFiles() as $file) {
        try {
        } catch (gdcFileUploaderException $e) {}

This gives you much more control over the files because you gain direct access to the file object, so you can retrieve detailed information about each processed file.
Additionally you can use the saveFile() method’s arguments.
The first argument is the file object. The second argument takes a file name, so you can change the file’s name. By default the original name will be used.
The third one sets the upload directory.

Now to the advanced saveAllFiles(). As I mentioned its second argument takes a PHP callable.
By default the file’s name will be the same as on the user’s computer. But usually this is not what you want.
By passing the callable you can change this because it will be called for every processed file and can then return a new filename.

Here’s how it works:

	function fileNameGenerator($file) {
		return time().$file->getName().$file->getSuffix();
	$uploader = new gdcFileUploader;
	try {
		$uploader->saveAllFiles('.', 'fileNameGenerator');
	} catch (gdcFileUploaderException $e) {}

This of course allows you to perfom other operations on every file. So you can reuse code in different places of your project.

Adding Criteria

Now imagine you run a gallery application. You want your users to submit pictures to it. Of course you want ONLY pictures and no other stuff.
Of course gdcFileUploader offers a way to achieve this ;-)

	$uploader = new gdcFileUploader('.');
	try {
	} catch (gdcFileUploaderException $e) {}

Pretty easy, huh? And really self explanatory.

Of course you can also limit the files’ size.
This time we use the much easier alternative syntax for criterias and the constructor’s second argument.

	$uploader = new gdcFileUploader('.', 'type=image|EQUAL size=1024|LESS_EQUAL');
	try {
	} catch (gdcFileUploaderException $e) {}

This limits allowed files to images which are 1MB or less in file size and uploads them.
And all of this in just 4 lines of code!

Retrieving Information

Ok, up to now you’ve learned everything (or at least almost everything) to know about uploading files.
But like I promised in the intro you can also retrieve a lot of information about the files.

There’s really a lot of stuff to know about your files. Let’s see an example output.
