I don't know what the intended behavior is with respect to checking for contribution updates, but it would be great to provide a menu option or a button on the Modes list saying "Check for Updates".

This feature request is motivated by recent experience, getting bug reports for Python Mode from users who are several versions behind.

+ 1. I've had a similar experience with PDE X too.

Update checking always happens on startup (though delayed by a few seconds)... Maybe it's only checking libraries and tools, but not modes?

I don't remember seeing a prompt suggesting the user that a new version of XYZ mode is now available. (Maybe my memory fails me..)
But on opening the Contribution Manager, it does show a message that a new version of this mode is available.

Even if you know there's an update available, unless I misunderstand, the user still has to uninstall the mode, then install the new one.

Also, the Modes list doesn't tell you what version of the mode you have installed, and which one is the latest.

Agreed. There should be an option to display the version numbers - the 'pretty version' field. This should be made standard for all contributions in fact. Will help avoid confusion.

Guys, now we're getting into unrelated feature requests... You're both on this project and know that they need to be filed as separate issues.

Back to the original issue, it'd be helpful if one of you could check whether the automatic update checking is not working for modes. As you know, there is no army of people who can track these things down for you.

If updating a mode requires uninstall and reinstall, that's also a bug, please file it.

Sorry, my bad. I'll re-check if automatic update for modes works or not. Mr Feinberg has already filed a separate issue for version numbers.

@galsasson and I have been slow to start GSOC with the end of the ITP semester, but want to loop him in here as the contributions manager stuff we'll be discussing this week (examples, libraries, modes) can be in his domain.

@fjenett fjenett added this to the GSOC 14 - Joel/Florian milestone Jun 10, 2014
