Is there a way to truncate logs opposed to purging all data?

Haven't found a way for truncting data when running out of disk space on our prometheus machine.

The flag -storage.local.retention allows you to configure how much history is kept. Data older than that will constantly be truncated.

You can read more here: http://prometheus.io/docs/operating/storage/#disk-usage
