Serlvers 0.1.0
==============

Serlvers is a set of Erlang modules designed to help in the implementation of IP services (that is TCP/IP or Internet servers).

Serlvers consists of a set of behaviours abstract the internals of each protocol and other modules help with the infrastructure.

The goal is that when making a server you would only worry about how to store, handle, prosses, etc the information instead of the internals of each protocol (to save you for countless hours of RFC reading).

At this stage only 4 protocols are supported:

- `Echo (RFC862) <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc862.txt>`__
- `Chargen (RFC864) <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc864.txt>`__
- `Daytime (RFC867) <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc867.txt>`__
- `Time (RFC868) <http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc868.txt>`__

They are a bit useless but they are here for a purpose: To be an example and a prof of concept.

They are examples of how a protocol is implemented but they are also examples of the quality I am aiming with Serlvers, on code quality, on code style and on documentation quality and extension.

An example of how Serlvers is used can be found on `Fanterlastic Four <http://pupeno.com/software/fanterlastic-four>`__.

Getting
-------

You can find the lattest version of Serlvers on http://pupeno.com/software/serlvers

Requirements
------------

Here I list what I use, but other versions, newer and older, may work. I am interested in knowing either case, working or not to try to fix them and/or list them:

- `SCons <http://scons.org>`__ 0.96.1
- `SCons Erlang <http://pupeno.com/software/scons-erlang>`__ 0.1.0
- `Erlang/OTP <http://erlang.org>`__ R10B-10

Documentation
-------------

When you download Serlvers you'll get the documentation as well (after compiling, on the doc/ directory) but it is also on-line on http://pupeno.com/software/serlvers/documentation/

Installation
------------

SCons is used to compile and install this package.

First check out the variables you need to set by running::

  scons --help

You'll need to set PREFIX, the prefix directory (where Erlang is installed, it contains something like: bin erts-5.4.13 Install lib misc releases usr) and at the same time you set it, it'll compile.

Then run::

  scons install

to install. You might need sudo or su to reach superuser capabilities.

For example::

  $ scons PREFIX=/usr/lib/erlang
  scons: Reading SConscript files ...
  scons: done reading SConscript files.
  scons: Building targets ...
  erl -noshell -run edoc_run files '["src/launcher.erl","src/gen_echo.erl","src/gen_chargen.erl","src/gen_daytime.erl","src/gen_time.erl"]' '[{dir, "doc/"}]' -run init stop
  erlc -o src/ src/gen_chargen.erl
  erlc -o src/ src/gen_daytime.erl
  erlc -o src/ src/gen_echo.erl
  erlc -o src/ src/gen_time.erl
  erlc -o src/ src/launcher.erl
  scons: done building targets.
  $ sudo scons install
  scons: Reading SConscript files ...
  scons: done reading SConscript files.
  scons: Building targets ...
  Install file: "src/gen_chargen.beam" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/ebin/gen_chargen.beam"
  Install file: "src/gen_daytime.beam" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/ebin/gen_daytime.beam"
  Install file: "src/launcher.beam" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/ebin/launcher.beam"
  Install file: "src/gen_chargen.erl" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/src/gen_chargen.erl"
  Install file: "src/gen_daytime.erl" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/src/gen_daytime.erl"
  Install file: "src/launcher.erl" as "/usr/lib/erlang/lib/serlvers-0.1.0/src/launcher.erl"
  scons: done building targets.

Development
-----------

You can download the `development branch`_ that is updated to the minute. This version is unstable, it might not even work. To download it you have to use `Darcs <http://darcs.net>`__ and run::

  darcs get http://software.pupeno.com/Serlvers

.. _`development branch`: http://software.pupeno.com/cgi-bin/darcs.cgi/Serlvers/?c=browse
