@commonism are you still interested in getting this merged? I'm not seeing email_validator.__version__ even in the latest releases of email_validator — was this PR assuming that that would eventually be added? Or am I misunderstanding something?

To assist migration, the check even works without version.

I think it is beneficial to check extras for version requirements which are not satisfied/guaranteed when upgrading pydantic within a venv.

This change raised the following error in my deployment: "No package metadata was found for email-validator".

That happened because you are now using importlib.metadata to check the version and I was not packaging the dist-info directory.

Adding the dist-info directory to my package solved the problem.

Some tools, such as Serverless Python Requirements, remove metadata, test files, cache files and others in order to generate smaller packages.

Hopefully other people with the same issue will find this comment and save the debugging time.
