Documentation builds on Read the Docs are currently broken

It appears that since we departed from requirements.txt files, RTD cannot build the documentation anymore. This would not be too much of a problem if we didn't link to RTD for the docs of the stable version. Either drop RTD altogether, or see how we can support it again (maybe by re-adding the requirements file - something I would avoid if possible).

Looks like RTD offers beta support for extra_require http://read-the-docs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/yaml-config.html?highlight=setup.py#python-extra-requirements

Actually, builds are now restored on RTD but current 'stable' is still not updated there. A new stable release will be needed to fix that.
