The bug occurs when installing a development version of a package where the desired package is stored in something other than SVN. To replicate try this:

pip install flask==dev

then run pip freeze to get result similar to this:

Warning: cannot find svn location for Flask==0.7dev-20110514
## FIXME: could not find svn URL in dependency_links for this package:
Flask==0.7dev-20110514
Jinja2==2.5.5
Werkzeug==0.6.2
wsgiref==0.1.2

This is also true for development versions of a package stored in a Mercurial repository (I am referring to the issue title):

>>pip install hg+https://code.google.com/p/pymssql/
[setup output]
>>pip freeze
Warning: cannot find svn location for pymssql==2.0.0b1-dev-20120504
Cython==0.16
Django==1.4
SQLAlchemy==0.7.6
distribute==0.6.24
psycopg2==2.4.5
## FIXME: could not find svn URL in dependency_links for this package:
pymssql==2.0.0b1-dev-20120504
pyodbc==3.0.5

Warning is issued here: https://github.com/pypa/pip/blob/develop/pip/__init__.py#L174

@robi-wan When you link to source always link to specific version as develop is a moving target.

Closing this, I cannot reproduce this and the reproduction code relies on a feature in PyPI that no longer exists. If someone runs into this again with a reproduction that still works, please reopen this issue.
