Working on translating this page in French, I don't understand the meaning of this particular clause. It seems to me as a word is missing ("there would be no XXX changing this while preserving backward compatibility", XXX would be "benefit", "advantage", ...).
May someone confirm that this is an ellipsis or that I miss the meaning?

NB : of course, English is not my mother tongue.

This is an idiomatic phrase; it means "This would not be changed while...". Maybe it's informal or only North American English; I've definitely heard it before in contexts like "there was no persuading her".
