VirtualTree doesn't render if hideRoot is true #9390

See playground sample

The tree's hideRoot property is set to true, and the only way to get the tree to render is to call the refresh() method when nodes are added. As the example stands, no tree nodes will be rendered as they are added every 5 seconds. To see cause the nodes to render, uncomment this.refresh() at line 54. The bug also goes away if the hideRoot property is set to false, at line 35.

Look also at commit a337932 which limits when __applyModelChanges() is called. I believe the bug lies in this area, but changes in that area break existing tests.
