While RelationalFunctionCall can be used to join in external functions, SQLFire (Derby) requires join to be wrapped in TABLE()
e.g. left join TABLE (exteranlTableFunction(?) )

so prefix "TABLE (" and post fix ")" required to be added
as
RelationalFunctionCall .create(String.class, "exteranlTableFunction", "paramValue");

Alternatively a new JoinFlag Position could be added, BEFORE_ALIAS, to allow
JoinFlag.START with "TABLE ("
and
JoinFlag.BEFORE_ALIAS with ")"
to solve the problem

Note: JoinFlag.END adds flag value after the AS AliasName

This is an extentition to functionality specified in issue #35
