In particular, Project M:

FWIW, Clementine (http://www.clementine-player.org/) now supports this by default, as shown here:

This is possible with gstreamer by using pulsesrc and piping it into the the new gl elements.

Needs gstreamer gl 0.10.3 (not in ubuntu/debian) and a running pulseaudio.
There are also (basic and slow) non GL based visualisation elements in gstreamer.
