Could you double check you don't have a browser plugin that is blocking the js/css libraries?

Hmm I see. The article renders fine with rmarkdown::render("glmmTMB/vignettes/covstruct.rmd") however for:

rmarkdown::render(input, output_format = r_universe_format())

I indeed see:
