I'm receiving the following error when starting my application after upgrading Rack from 2.1.2 to 2.2.1:

My looks like this:

# frozen_string_literal: true

require 'rubygems'
require 'bundler'

$LOAD_PATH << './lib'

require 'international_transfers_service'
run InternationalTransfersServiceApp

On this line:

dir is nil. dir comes from this line:

@options is

So it doesn't include chdir.

I checked 2-1-stable and I couldn't find any reference to a chdir option.

Looking at thin, I see:

which is provided to the controller here:

But when using rackup it goes via the code here:

I don't think this is providing chdir. Looking at the history of that file, I can't see how it ever worked... since I can't see that we ever provided that option.

ioquatix commented Feb 9, 2020

Okay, I think I found the problem.

In this commit, we changed from using Thin::Server to Thin::Controllers::Controller. This seems to have broken thin. Because Thin::Controllers::Controller requires the :chdir option.

@jeremyevans I guess we need to add a default :chdir option and additionally, if we are going to continue to support thin, we should add some tests for it.

Ideally, we'd probably test all rackup servers.

ioquatix commented Feb 9, 2020

You have two options right now.

  • Stay on rack 2.1.2
  • Use a different server.

Sorry about that. I have no knowledge of Thin, and the issue report and recommended fix looked reasonable to me. In general, required options are a pretty bad.

I will revert the commit to restore compatibility.

@jeremyevans is there an ETA to when v2.2.2 will be released?

@poloka I believe @ioquatix is planning a release soon, probably today or tomorrow.

Yes, I will be doing it now.

This reverts commit 371bd58.

This broke the thin adapter. Reverting it restores the previous
behavior. This was added to make SSL configuration easier. Users
who want to do that should use the thin executable instead of the
rackup executable.

- `Server` supports an array of paths to require for the `:require` option. ([@khotta](
- `Files` supports multipart range requests. ([@fatkodima](

- `.ru` files supports the `frozen-string-literal` magic comment. ([@eregon](
- Rely on autoload to load constants instead of requiring internal files, make sure to require 'rack' and not just 'rack/...'. ([@jeremyevans](
- `Etag` will continue sending ETag even if the response should not be cached. ([@henm](
- `Request#host_with_port` no longer includes a colon for a missing or empty port. ([@AlexWayfer](
- All handlers uses keywords arguments instead of an options hash argument. ([@ioquatix](
- `Files` handling of range requests no longer return a body that supports `to_path`, to ensure range requests are handled correctly. ([@jeremyevans](
- `Multipart::Generator` only includes `Content-Length` for files with paths, and `Content-Disposition` `filename` if the `UploadedFile` instance has one. ([@jeremyevans](

- `BodyProxy#each` as it was only needed to work around a bug in Ruby <1.9.3. ([@jeremyevans](
- `URLMap::INFINITY` and `URLMap::NEGATIVE_INFINITY`, in favor of `Float::INFINITY`. ([@ch1c0t](
- Deprecation of `Rack::File`. It will be deprecated again in rack 2.2 or 3.0. ([@rafaelfranca](
