Please do work for this task in a branch called issue-107.

The student home pane has cards for recommended courses and activities. There are two issues with the current design:

  1. The algorithm for determining what courses and opportunities are recommended is expensive to compute each time the page loads, and thus makes the page less responsive.

  2. The user interface (an embedded vertically scolling pane) is non-intuitive for users. When they mouse over that region, it's not clear what to do.

To solve these problems, here is a proposal for a revised design:

  1. A cron job will calculate recommended courses and opportunities once per day for each user on the server side, and update a new set of collections appropriately. The collections have a student ID, the courseID or opportunityID, and maybe the ranking or strength of recommendation. The client-side just subscribes to the subset of these collections for the current studentID and adds them to the page; no computation necessary.

  2. Instead of a vertically scrolling pane, the cards will scroll horizontally, and a left/right arrow widget will provide explicit indication to the user that they can move through the set of displayed recommendations.
