A program to compute the nth Fibonacci number
===
-Since [I'm looking for a job](http://braythwayt.com/RegBraithwaiteDev0110_en_US.pdf "Reginald Braithwaite's Resume") and people often like to ask for a [fizzbuzz](http://weblog.raganwald.com/2007/01/dont-overthink-fizzbuzz.html "Don't Overthink FizzBuzz") program to weed out the folks who can't string together a few lines of code, I thought I'd write up a program to compute the nth Fibonacci number. There's an intriguing bit of matrix math involved, so I learned something while implementing it.

+[2008]: Reminder: This was written in 2008. It may not (or may!) reflect my situation when you are reading this.
Recently I was having lunch with [some of Toronto's most interesting Ruby developers](http://unspace.ca), and the subject of interview questions came up. Specifically, writing a program to compute the nth Fibonacci number. Unsurprisingly, we agreed it might be useful as a screener for weeding out the people who were completely delusional about their prospects as a professional programmer. You know, the type of person who stares blankly at the screen and has no idea where to start, even when told that all we wanted was a program that correctly prints an answer. No tests, no specs, no shouldas, no passengers, no CSS, just prove you actually can write something, anything.

One of the subjects I try to discuss with prospective employers is how we could put my non-coding/non-management traits to work. When working with one company some little time ago, a colleague once confided in me that I was the reason he did not resign from the company. After blushing, I told him that he had better find some other reasons, and we worked together to transform his job from "Only worth doing because of Reg" to "Great, with Reg as a bonus."
-Good people help retain good people. Good people with notoriety *attract* good people. I have a small "brand," but for all that it is very specific and should not be carelessly wasted. I'm looking for the type of company where we can put "The Braithwaite Effect" to work attracting and retaining the best people available. Do you own/work for such a company or know someone who does? Please pass [my resume](http://braythwayt.com/RegBraithwaiteDev0110_en_US.pdf "Reg Braithwaite") along.
