no I mean with this patch we would restrict javascript features.
surely it is better to only use ascii characters for the callback name but maybe some apps are needing this

Yeah, that’s the regular expression I generated for JavaScript. I’m not sure if it would work in Ruby, though — does Ruby exhibit the same UCS-2-like behavior as JavaScript?

Maybe throw in $ and _, but yeah — this is definitely the easiest solution. The allowed/disallowed Unicode symbols in JavaScript identifiers will change in ES6 anyway, and after that it may change every time a new Unicode version is released. In other words, using a regular expression to validate identifiers exactly as per ECMAScript introduces a maintainability burden.

@kitcambridge Sadly, that regex (while much more elegant) would cause some false positives. Supplementary Unicode characters (e.g. U+2F800 CJK Compatibility Ideograph, which is listed in the [Lo] category) are disallowed in identifier names, as JavaScript interprets them as two individual surrogate halves (e.g. \uD87E\uDC00) which don’t match any of the allowed Unicode categories. Your regex, however, would allow such a character IIUC. Also, the regex doesn’t account for the NaN, Infinity, and undefined edge cases. In strict mode, eval and arguments are disallowed, too. (Like you said, browsers would likely throw errors in those cases — but I’m not sure if we should be relying on that.)

I think relying on this is stupid. Callback option is dead easy thing, you just use it for strict verification. And nothing more complex than $jquery_123123 should be accepted. Because the complex and "proper" verification with UTF symbols is just waste of time, IMO! If the developer needs something more he routinely writes his own thing
