Structure of citations:

Chapter.Element.Section.Instruction

Chapter number - whole numbers
Element number - decimal numbers
Section number - decimal numbers
Instruction number - decimal numbers

Note: preliminaries and appendices that use citations follow the same format -- X.X.X.X -- but second and third components of the citation are not tied to elements in the second section or format in the third section. Preliminaries and appendices are numbered so that their internal hierarchy, if applicable, works.

Chapters (first part of citation)

Preface - no numbering
Introduction - citation number begins with lowercase i
Preliminaries - chapter 0
Element chapters - chapter numbers start at 1

1 - Title
2 - Statement of responsibility
3 - Edition
4 - Mathematical details
5 - Production, publication, distribution, manufacture
6 - Physical description
7 - Numbering of serials
8 - Series
9 - Additional notes
10 - Identifiers

Appendices -- uses letters -- chapter numbering starts at A (I, V, and X are reserved for Introduction)

Elements (second part of citation)

For the initial element numbering, numbers started with .2 except in Chapter 9; this gave us space before and after to insert elements as necessary.

In Chapter 9, element numbers are organized thusly:

9.1_ - notes on works
9.2_ - notes on expression
9.3_ - notes on manifestation
9.4_ - notes on item

Elements may be inserted as necessary, carrying the decimal further to achieve the desired results.

Sections (third part of citation)

Within each element, the sections are numbered:

X.X.1 – Element information
X.X.2 – RDA definition and scope
X.X.3 – Format-neutral
X.X.4 – Text
X.X.5 – Continuing resource
X.X.6 – Still image
X.X.7 – Manuscript
X.X.8 – Music
X.X.9 – Cartographic

X.X.21 is used for DCRMR elaboration on scope; this is not used often.

X.X.25 is used for Related Elements; this is not used often.

Most instructions will be in X.X.3, General rule.

X.X.3 (e.g., instructions X.X.3.1, X.X.3.2, etc.) is reserved for a format-neutral General Rule.

X.X.3_ (eg., X.X.31 with instructions X.X.31.1, X.X.31.2, etc.) is used for format-neutral rules.

Text may include instructions from DCRM(B) and DCRM(S).

The tenths spot (X.X._) is used as grouping locations only in X.X.4 and later, with the hundredths (X.X.xx) and thousandths (X.X.xxx) used for the section numbering as necessary to keep order.

In X.X.4 - X.X.9, the X.X._1 is reserved for general rules; if a section has no general rules, numbering starts at X.X._2.

Sections may be inserted as necessary, carrying the decimal further to achieve the desired order.

X.X.1 – Element definition
X.X.2 – RDA definition and scope
X.X.3 – General rule

X.X.4 – Text (gathering number only)
X.X.41 – Text: general rule*
X.X.42 – Text, other section 1
X.X.425 – Text, other section inserted at a later date
X.X.43 – Text, other section 2

X.X.5 - Continuing resources (gathering number only)
X.X.51 - Continuing resources: general rule*
X.X.52 - Continuing resources, other section 1

X.X.6 – Still image (gathering number only)
X.X.61 – Still image: general rule*
X.X.62 – Still image, other section 1

X.X.7 – Manuscript (gathering number only)
X.X.71 – Manuscript: general rule*
X.X.72 – Manuscript, section rule 1

X.X.8 – Music (gathering number only)
X.X.81 – Music: general rule*
X.X.82 – Music, section rule 1

X.X.9 – Cartographic (gathering number only)
X.X.91 – Cartographic: general rule*
X.X.92 – Cartographic, section rule 1

*If applicable

At a later date, if it becomes necessary to insert a section prior to the Element definition, zero may be used (X.X.0).

Instructions (fourth part of citation)

Instructions may be inserted as necessary, carrying the decimal further to achieve the desired order

X.X.4.2
X.X.4.3

Becomes

X.X.4.2
X.X.4.25, instruction inserted at a later date
X.X.3

Start at one (e.g., X.X.x.1); if necessary at a later date, a .0x instruction can be inserted before the .1

X.X.x.1

Becomes

X.X.x.05
X.X.x.1

Deprecation

Citation numbers are not reused.

A citation number may be deprecated if:

  • an element is deprecated
  • text, either of an individual instruction or a distinct section, is moved or deleted
  • an instruction is substantively edited and becomes, in effect, an entirely new instruction

Deprecated citation numbers will be placed on the Deprecated citation number list. Deprecated citation numbers may include two-part citation numbers for elements, three-part citation numbers for sections, and four-part citation numbers for individual instructions.
