Is it possible to make Xabber work with XMPP and SMS uniformly? That is (for one peer) having XMPP messages and SMS in one history/one window + allowing the option to send messages through XMPP or SMS and so on.

That is how messaging application works on Maemo OS.
Add MMS here and many things on to advance.

This would basically be a combination of adding SMS support and metacontacts #144

OTR over SMS would be great

SMS doesn't have Presence information, however.

I am strictly against SMS support in Xabber.

Xabber is an XMPP client. If you want to use SMS, use an SMS app. If you want encrypted SMS, use TextSecure.

Xabber has the real potential oft replacing all Google Talk features (as in, the Talk Service) with fully standards-complient federated XMPP features. I will elaborate on that later, for now:

Help Xabber make federated XMPP mainstream - do not make Xabber an allround app for dumb users.

If Android supported a generic messaging interface, i would have been for integrating with that. But because this is not the case, and an unclear distinction of communication mediums is, in my opinion, confusing for most people and might cause unexpected costs due to using SMS when you think you are using Jabber, i am against this.

Showing the contacts in the people app is imo the perfect solution regarding uniformity.

If we go for SMS we'll create a separate SMS application.

I'm quite enjoying TextSecure now. I'm glad that I was told about it.

This would allow a gradual bridge to XMPP replacing SMS over time, greatly increasing the possibility of growth.
