Live Texture Updater Plug-in for Generator (Modified Image Asset Generation Plug-in)

This repository contains a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop CC's Generator extensibility layer. This plug-in makes it easier for users to export image assets from their Photoshop files. Users simply enable image asset generation for a document and name layers (or layer groups, or smart objects) they want exported using a filename-like syntax. Generator then watches these layers, and any time they change, automatically updates the corresponding assets on disk.

This plugin has the ability to added a top layer with the name of "root=./my/path" and put folders into the layer names. It also provides a WebSocket server that clients can connect to and get image change events to reload texture in realtime.

To learn more about Generator and creating your own Generator plug-ins, please visit the Generator Core repo.

Installation

Install Node.js.

Copy this folder into your Applications\Adobe Photoshop CC\Plug-ins\Generator folder (if the Generator folder doesn't exist create it).

In the command prompt go to Applications\Adobe Photoshop CC\Plug-ins\Generator\live-texture-updater folder and type in:

npm install

Reload Photoshop CC.

Usage

The Live Texture Updater supporst the below specs on the Image Assets plugin, but also supports a layer with a name of "root=./my/path" or "root=/full/path/to/somewhere". If a top layer with "root=" is not found it reverts to the Image Assets plugin logic of creating a folder next to the PSD file.

The other modification is you can add folder paths to the layer names of outputted images.

For example if I had a PSD called GameAssets.psd located in /Games/Game1/SourceFiles/ and the following layer names. A blank layer with the name "root=../bin/images". And a group or layer with the name of "enemies/enemy1.png". I would have my enemy1.png image outputted to "/Games/Game1/bin/images/enemy1.png".

The Functional Spec provides basic information about how to use the Image Assets plug-in. Another good source of information is Samartha Vashishtha's blog post A closer look at the Photoshop Generator syntax.
