I've got a workable system for producing speech bubbles without needing a visual editor. (It does need a way to at least occasionally feed hints for placement.) It's entirely in Ren'py script and could be redone more efficiently if based in the engine though.

Promised a long time ago. Now that we have translations and auto-voice implemented, we can implement interactive speech bubble editing support.
