Keyword-based categories #45
Comments
I'm a bit in doubt, if this feature will be used by a appreciable amount of users. Has the need of it been discussed? Implementing this feature could take remarkable effort and should only be done, if a significant amount of users asks for it and intend to use it. |
I'm under the impression that that Lightroom has some issues with the way it's handling keywords. I've seen reports (blogposts from users) that some of the unexplainable high CPU usage and slowness in Lightroom comes from the keyword function. Such as the processing keywording, smart collections with keywords etc. This is backed up with my personal experience as well. My experience is very much in line with what Warren Young is writing in this discussion: http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/52708/how-many-keywords-are-possible-in-lightroom-without-a-performance-penalty. Particulary keyword trees seems to be a high tax on Lightroom. So, to make this comment relevant to this suggested enhancement of MediaWiki. I'm a heavy users of categories in Wikimedia/Commons. And athough I'm in favour on anything that will make categorizing uploads from Lightroom, I'm worried that connecting Wikimedia Categories with Lightroom Keywords, will cause a strain on Lightroom. If categories in MediaWiki are to be enhanced, I personally would have a benefit from typing categories in MediaWiki, and having MediaWiki performing a check to see if the categories exists or not. |
@toresetre: Currently I'm working at "Autocompletion for categories (Export dialog) #2" and expect to solve this issue. Autocompletion will work at export dialog, not per file (it needs to be logged in the target MediaWiki instance). |

There have been unexpected challenges, some timing problems in server communication. I stopped working at the autocompletion issue. Maybe, later I'm going for a new approach. |
Milestone 1.1 povides a proposal |
Create a dialog that allows the user to define a mapping from keywords to categories.
