It refers to a formatter:filename syntax that doesn't actually work:

$ rspec spec --format documentation:rspec.output.txt
/Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/gems/rspec-core-2.11.1/lib/rspec/core/configuration.rb:482:in `add_formatter': Formatter 'documentation:rspec.output.txt' unknown - maybe you meant 'documentation' or 'progress'?. (ArgumentError)

    from /Users/john/.rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.3-p194/gems/rspec-core-2.11.1/lib/rspec/core/runner.rb:8:in `block in autorun'

I think this is meant to refer to the --out option instead.

It looks like --format documentation:<output> was never expected. I vote for just switching it to a --out.

@vanstee vanstee Fix example of --format with --out
Seperating format and output file with a colon was never supported and
was probably added by accident. The output filename was also updated to
be consistent with later examples. Fixes #704
