The ControllerExampleGroup documentation gives the spiel about testing controllers in isolation and says that the view does not even have to exist. The controller isolation_from_views.feature states that unlike rspec-rails 1.x, the view file is required in 2.x.
If I had a preference, I'd like the old behavior back so that controllers are truly tested in isolation, but this ticket would be satisfied if the documentation was just consistent.
We have the same preference. It's just not feasible due to changes in Rails 3.
Update rdoc for controller specs.
