From: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/previousnext-links-2

When viewing a photo, there should be previous/next links to view other photos in the album/view...

PLUS: The navigation should be "circular" i.e. on the last picture too there should be a NEXT link, which should take to the first picture.

Yep. We will be using some jQuery plugin.

My current concern is to use AJAX preloading to fetch "prev" and "next" image always in advance. (as soon as page gets loaded, before user starts navigating)

Second concern is permalink! I wish to maintain clean permalink for every single-media object.

In terms of libraries, I prefer fancybox http://fancybox.net/ though there are quite a few good ones out there.

Media files are attachments, and all attachments have a unique URL. So that's not going anywhere. Unless you load the images in a Flash or Java container, the URL is available for Search Engines to index. What am I getting wrong?

AJAX preload is a good idea. Just ensure it happens onloads, and doesn't stand in way of other page elements loading. With so many elements using their own tricks on techniques, that can be a handful. Also consider using sprites for previous/next and any other icons used.

We also like fancybox :-)

Every time has its own permalink but when we are scrolling in fancybox, navigation URL in browser's address bar may not change. I am thinking of pros/cons of changing address-bar value through javascript. Not sure if it will be good choice as noone does it...

I guess once we get there, things will become clear. From 2.6 to 2.9 - most releases will focus on usability only...

I see what you mean. The most popular WordPress gallery is NextGen. They don't worry about this. So I suspect most people don't worry about it.

That being said, I think it is a good idea to have a unique reference for displaying a particular image in context. This enables useful sharing not only inside but also outside the network.

I guess it's a judgment call that you'll have to base on the amount of work required and what other items/tasks demand your time.

This will be fixed under - #334

Previous/Next are already present in lightbox along with circular reference.
