@mikaelcarrara

Hi,

I'm a UX Designer / Front-end Developer at HE:labs (Brazil).
This is my suggestion for the new concept for home. What you think?

This footer icon is not mine, ok? (https://twitter.com/LVRUG). I can design another.

I like it. I'd go further on UX improvements, but this flattening is already pretty good move.

@mikaelcarrara Hi, looks good! I like Ruby logo in footer area ❤️ Could you make pull request with this design?

Quite nice design.

If I can suggest something I will like it more without right sidebar completly. I will leave the code snippet in the section Ruby is... But everything else from that sidebar I will place somwhere below in another section, for example in that blue place where other news are. Other news I will do between news and that section but with some soft pastel colour. Right now other news are overexposed in my opinion, focus eye more than latest news. Or totally remove other news section. News are news why divide them for two sections? Just few thoughts.

👎 I do not like all the boxes in the recent news and other news parts, it makes the site fall into a lot of different pieces and hinders a good reading flow. I like the current more cohesive, article-like design more.

I also agree with @crabonature that the Other News section is much too prominent (though IMO it shouldn't be removed completely). Also the author/date are too prominently placed, the content is what matters.

I think the "one-piece" sidebar is an improvement over the current "splitted" one, but the code example doesn't fit there. (BTW: Is the code example meant to be in the sidebar also on subpages?)

Overall, I like the current solution more.

@mikaelcarrara

@stomar I'm sorry.

@mikaelcarrara

@crabonature I agree with you. In my opinion we can remove the "Other News" section.

@mikaelcarrara

@hsbt This is just a mockup yet. I cloned this project to my machine and I will start this soon.

Regarding 'Other News': from time to time news comes in bigger batches at the same time (typical case: vulnerability and new releases for several maintenance branches). Which could mean that the previous day's news could be off the home page already. Solutions: 1. more excerpts or 2. only few excerpts and headers of some more news (current solution). I prefer solution 2.

@mikaelcarrara np. I'll discuss renewal of ruby-lang.org with matz and ruby-core team tomorrow.

@mikaelcarrara

I had used this icon on footer as an example for me and I forgot to change later.

@fuadsaud

The icon is really nice indeed.

@mikaelcarrara

@fuadsaud Yes but I have to change. Is not mine. I just forgot.

I see. Anyway of getting it into creative commons or something? :/

@mikaelcarrara

@fuadsaud I don't know but I can ask a permission for the author. At first moment we can just remove this.

@stomar Someone could say yesterday news are not news anymore today ;)

Now I understand why there is this Other News section, but wasn't it be better to show for example 5-6 latest news (or the number of the possible highest number of news which can be posted one day)? All of them got the same value to the visitor - no matter of date. And below them 'More news' link going to news page where will be 8-10 news or so.

Right now it's little confusing on the page where we got 4 main articles, 6 in others section but when visitor click a link 'More news' (dedicated for news) he is punished for that because there are only 5 latest news, so 5 news fewer than on the main site (click with no value added for person visiting page).

The mismatch in the number of shown links on the news page is an oversight that can easily be fixed.

...done. You now have 10 recent posts (plus the links to the archive pages, of course).

@mikaelcarrara thoughts on using SVGs for most of the images? SVG can contain text and links, and even be embedded directly into the HTML.

@mikaelcarrara

@postmodern Yes, I was thinking of using SVG for logo.

@mikaelcarrara

I received an email today asking me to stop with this redesign. I have to wait the announce for a public competition. This is an Open Source site and I just want to contribute to it, but ok...

When will do the Redesign Contest so everyone has a chance to submit a redesign PR?

@lunks
lunks commented Aug 30, 2013

It's kind of a bummer when someone comes up with the idea of a redesign and all of a sudden a redesign contest emerges like this.

AFAIK, everyone could just do a redesign and it could either be rejected or accepted. The code is open and available (and the main reason is for everyone to contribute to it, I guess).

Why not just let @mikaelcarrara go ahead with this instead of creating a redesign contest?

@mikaelcarrara

Yes, let's work together everybody.

I thik the work should be collaborative, not concurrent. You proposed, go
ahead; I see no difference in this contribution in comparison to regular
ones.

One thought more. In my opinion it's great idea that there will be an official competition. Nicely done. 👍 Hah if only I got graphics skills I could participate in it... Anyone know how to force brain to become a good graphic?

@mikaelcarrara If someone plan a contest it can be great time to learn something more (it not stops you to do redesign doesn't it?), because maybe there is a lot of creative people (giving tons of ideas) like you who will like to redesign site but got no knowledge of the need for change of design. Simply they don't know there is a chance for that. Right now you done one great thing: you triggered process of change :) Wouldn't you like for example to win a contest than just simply contribute to repository? Glory and fame and maybe some 🍶 :)

@fuadsaud Changing layout of such page like this is little hard. It's not like contribution to content of it. Because it can be confusing for visitors if layout will change every week. People get used for something and changing it too frequently can go to frustration.

@mikaelcarrara and all: I'm sorry too late response. I arranged official design contest with Ruby Association. http://www.ruby.or.jp/en/news/20130924.html

I hope that you submit new design in this issue.

@hsbt I think the contest should be announced on ruby-lang.org, too.
(Short announcement and link to official submission guidelines.)

@crabonature

@hsbt, @stomar yep I think it's should be announced in here too, because it's about this site.

End of contest is scheduled for November 8th. I have been quite busy lately, and haven't followed the issues. Are there any submissions? I did a very quick search on keywords such as "design" and "contest" and couldn't find any.
