I'm using Mac OS X, I couldn't find .zshrc or .bashrc files so I created them in the directory:

with the following code:

. /Users/simonowen/
function precmd () {
_z --add "$(pwd -P)"

. /Users/simonowen/

Added the file from:

I then opened terminal, did some cd, then tried using z, but got the following error:
-bash: z: command not found

Tried closing and opening Terminal again, but still get the same error.

OSX needs a little extra setup than Linux - your .bashrc isn't getting processed. See this and try what they are saying about ~/.bash_profile.

Also, you don't need the .zshrc stuff unless you are using zsh, which you aren't.
