From 8923b589bd42838842d8acb20e66637a6fee8765 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Adam Gemmell Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2024 15:19:30 +0000 Subject: [PATCH 01/11] Document restricted_std This PR aims to pin down exactly what restricted_std is meant to achieve and what it isn't. This commit fixes https://github.com/rust-lang/wg-cargo-std-aware/issues/87 by explaining why the error appears and what the choices the user has. The error describes how std cannot function without knowing about some form of OS/platform support. Any features of std that work without an OS should be moved to core/alloc (see https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/27242 https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/103765). Note that the message says "platform" and "environment" because, since https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/120232, libstd can be built for some JSON targets. This is still unsupported (all JSON targets probably should be unstable https://github.com/rust-lang/wg-cargo-std-aware/issues/90), but a JSON target with the right configuration should hopefully have some partial libstd support. I propose closing https://github.com/rust-lang/wg-cargo-std-aware/issues/69 as "Won't fix" since any support of std without properly configured os, vendor or env fields is very fragile considering future upgrades of Rust or dependencies. In addition there's no likely path to it being fixed long term (making std buildable for all targets being the only solution). This is distinct from tier 3 platforms with limited std support implemented (and as such aren't restricted_std) because these platforms can conceptually work in the future and std support should mainly improve over time. The alternative to closing https://github.com/rust-lang/wg-cargo-std-aware/issues/69 is a new crate feature for std which escapes the restricted_std mechanism in build.rs. It could be used with the -Zbuild-std-features flag if we keep it permanently unstable, which I hope we can do anyway. A minor side-effect in this scenario is that std wouldn't be marked as unstable if documentation for it were generated with build-std. --- library/std/src/lib.rs | 11 ++++++++++- 1 file changed, 10 insertions(+), 1 deletion(-) diff --git a/library/std/src/lib.rs b/library/std/src/lib.rs index 31a8711e0eb97..049edfc389e90 100644 --- a/library/std/src/lib.rs +++ b/library/std/src/lib.rs @@ -220,7 +220,16 @@ #![cfg_attr(feature = "miri-test-libstd", feature(rustc_private))] // #![cfg_attr(not(feature = "restricted-std"), stable(feature = "rust1", since = "1.0.0"))] -#![cfg_attr(feature = "restricted-std", unstable(feature = "restricted_std", issue = "none"))] +#![cfg_attr( + feature = "restricted-std", + unstable( + feature = "restricted_std", + issue = "none", + reason = "You have attempted to use a standard library built for a platform that it doesn't \ + know how to support. The resolution to is that the `f16`/`f128` regression in the beta compiler was fixable without a revert, so the commit adding `#[cfg(not(bootstrap))]` is no longer useful (added in ). Revert this commit because not having these basic impls bootstrap-gated simplifies everything else that uses them. --- library/core/src/clone.rs | 5 +---- library/core/src/cmp.rs | 10 ++-------- library/core/src/lib.rs | 4 ++-- library/core/src/marker.rs | 8 +------- 4 files changed, 6 insertions(+), 21 deletions(-) diff --git a/library/core/src/clone.rs b/library/core/src/clone.rs index 44ae72bcd26bf..d448c5338fc46 100644 --- a/library/core/src/clone.rs +++ b/library/core/src/clone.rs @@ -227,13 +227,10 @@ mod impls { impl_clone! { usize u8 u16 u32 u64 u128 isize i8 i16 i32 i64 i128 - f32 f64 + f16 f32 f64 f128 bool char } - #[cfg(not(bootstrap))] - impl_clone! { f16 f128 } - #[unstable(feature = "never_type", issue = "35121")] impl Clone for ! { #[inline] diff --git a/library/core/src/cmp.rs b/library/core/src/cmp.rs index 81bba927554a4..fa218600ed925 100644 --- a/library/core/src/cmp.rs +++ b/library/core/src/cmp.rs @@ -1497,12 +1497,9 @@ mod impls { } partial_eq_impl! { - bool char usize u8 u16 u32 u64 u128 isize i8 i16 i32 i64 i128 f32 f64 + bool char usize u8 u16 u32 u64 u128 isize i8 i16 i32 i64 i128 f16 f32 f64 f128 } - #[cfg(not(bootstrap))] - partial_eq_impl! { f16 f128 } - macro_rules! eq_impl { ($($t:ty)*) => ($( #[stable(feature = "rust1", since = "1.0.0")] @@ -1553,10 +1550,7 @@ mod impls { } } - partial_ord_impl! { f32 f64 } - - #[cfg(not(bootstrap))] - partial_ord_impl! { f16 f128 } + partial_ord_impl! { f16 f32 f64 f128 } macro_rules! ord_impl { ($($t:ty)*) => ($( diff --git a/library/core/src/lib.rs b/library/core/src/lib.rs index 0ba3a557a035a..ad141c2b2625e 100644 --- a/library/core/src/lib.rs +++ b/library/core/src/lib.rs @@ -200,8 +200,6 @@ // // Language features: // tidy-alphabetical-start -#![cfg_attr(not(bootstrap), feature(f128))] -#![cfg_attr(not(bootstrap), feature(f16))] #![feature(abi_unadjusted)] #![feature(adt_const_params)] #![feature(allow_internal_unsafe)] @@ -226,6 +224,8 @@ #![feature(doc_notable_trait)] #![feature(effects)] #![feature(extern_types)] +#![feature(f128)] +#![feature(f16)] #![feature(freeze_impls)] #![feature(fundamental)] #![feature(generic_arg_infer)] diff --git a/library/core/src/marker.rs b/library/core/src/marker.rs index fb97b3bfa0926..1d073a6d649b8 100644 --- a/library/core/src/marker.rs +++ b/library/core/src/marker.rs @@ -422,17 +422,11 @@ marker_impls! { Copy for usize, u8, u16, u32, u64, u128, isize, i8, i16, i32, i64, i128, - f32, f64, + f16, f32, f64, f128, bool, char, {T: ?Sized} *const T, {T: ?Sized} *mut T, -} -#[cfg(not(bootstrap))] -marker_impls! { - #[stable(feature = "rust1", since = "1.0.0")] - Copy for - f16, f128, } #[unstable(feature = "never_type", issue = "35121")] From 454de78ea3073a284a7a8a41184789f9afa066a3 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Trevor Gross Date: Wed, 6 Mar 2024 05:40:29 -0600 Subject: [PATCH 07/11] Add basic library support for `f16` and `f128` Implement basic operation traits that get lowered to intrinsics.
