When using SyntaxHighlighter on Wordpress, IE doesn't display properly

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install the wordpress plugin
2. Open the page in IE8 

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I expect to see the syntax highlighter as usual, but instead it doesn't 
work, and IE gives the error message:
