  • 12 April 2022: This is really shoddy by Rufo. I did far more work trying to put these numbers into cotext for a brief, paywalled Substack than he did for an article on the website of a major think tank https://www.city-journal.org/abuse-in-schools-no-conspiracy-theory
  • 12 April 2022: In 15 years these will be seen as the most obvious points in the world and people will act like they didn't send us deranged torture-porn shit over it. There will be a lot of Who Me??? about the blacklists and the other bullshit
  • 12 April 2022: In the latest battle of False Claim versus Debunking, Debunking has once again prevailed. The season series stands at 392,394,501,382 - 0, False Claim. pic.twitter.com/r4qtUO7WYd
  • 12 April 2022: This is a very useful buzzkill thread. I want it to be the case that psychedelics will be as revolutionary to treating mental-health problems as their most enthusiastic proponents claim, but every serious flaw in the research Eiko mentions is a serious one. https://twitter.com/EikoFried/status/1513829020428816391
  • 12 April 2022: 3/ Sure but this doesn't actually work - w/a few small exceptions (Alex Jones getting the YouTube boot), attempts to ban stuff always spread the thing in question far and wide. All this does is make liberal institutions ever crazier and more insular https://twitter.com/StephenDDudek/status/1513908921085444099
  • 12 April 2022 (live): 2/ *Presumably signed by academics -- I don't think they are listing the signatories yet and it's unclear if they will or if it will remain anonymous
  • 12 April 2022 (live): Petition, signed by academics, to have an upcoming book laying out gender-critical philosophical views cancelled before anyone can read it https://twitter.com/oupusaguild/status/1513655723519008772
  • 11 April 2022: this is their response to me saying "hey, this is getting out of hand" and asking them to privately email me if they have feedback about my work unhealthy approach to disagreement, and one that fosters a culture of endless threats and over-the-top, eliminationist rhetoric https://twitter.com/theSitwellghost/status/1513627050837528576
  • 11 April 2022: Are you saying you'd deny us treatment because you disagree with us on Twitter? Just wanna make sure I have this right. Even if it were life-saving, or no?
  • 11 April 2022: 2/ One of the demands was that Lindo dissolve all her past business agreements w/r/t ghostwriting etc This is reasonable and normal stuff -- a healthy community just seeking justice https://twitter.com/marquisele/status/1512535790148014081
  • 11 April 2022 (live): Tomorrow's @TheBARPod is about this blowup -- def check out the quote-retweets https://twitter.com/LindoBaconX/status/1512437830890528776
  • 8 April 2022: I'm in favor of "keeping Europe European." No more migration from the Middle East. We must break up the present countries into warring chiefdoms and everyone has to go back to the patch of undeveloped mud their ancestors lived on, where they warred over potatoes for centuries.
  • 8 April 2022: Don't always agree with Wesley but this is... exactly what he's saying? The kids were convinced by adults they'd been abused? Very confused by this interaction. Maybe I should be less online naw never mind clearly I should quadruple down on Twitter. pic.twitter.com/eeBktHtQhA
  • 8 April 2022: There are few more serious warning signs that someone has a really bad personality, and that you should be wary about their presence in your life, than them attempting to exert control over who you associate with in any way, online or off
  • 8 April 2022: Someone posted my story critiquing that finding about puberty blockers and hormones to Hacker News and it was immediately 'flagged.' There's nothing remotely offensive in the comments. In my experience it's seen as inherently bigoted to raise any qualms about these treatments. pic.twitter.com/rbuK2CKKvf
  • 7 April 2022: w/ I guess I am a Koch Shill because I have written for Reason but on the other hand I am also, like Legum, a Soros Shill because I worked for CAP!
  • 7 April 2022 (live): This is so insanely dishonest from Legum -- it is frustrating watching more and more of the left wing ecosystem become fever swamps https://reason.com/2022/04/07/stand-together-judd-legum-ukraine-russia/
  • 7 April 2022: 2/ Some light background reading befre you tune in: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/14/us/adolph-reed-controversy.html
  • 7 April 2022: 1/ Tomorrow at 5:30 ET I'll be discussing class, race, and the Democratic Socialists of America with @ClassUnityDSA member Jamal Abed-Rabbo, who has the good sense to not be on Twitter https://www.callin.com/room/lets-talk-about-class-race-and-the-dsa-CrLpmGKlKA
  • 7 April 2022: 2/ I'm trying to check a potential critique of my article on this paper and it is very very hard to even understand what is happening, over time, with the three groups (medicine, no-medicine, and dropped out). It doesn't help that I can't even figure out the basic numbers.
  • 7 April 2022: Very long day so I'm gonna throw this to the hive mind. Am I missing something or should the numbers in the same-colored boxes be the same? They should, right? pic.twitter.com/sL6oJ5ykKx
  • 5 April 2022: 2/ They have a level of vindictiveness we lack -- constantly trying to get people fired, to dictate who is allowed to say what, and to engage in reputational napalming of anyone with even mild disagreement. The difference between Imani and Katie on actual substance is miniscule.
  • 5 April 2022: Herzog's crime was telling the story of detransitioners in an article that also featured happy transitioners. These people are insane, man. I've tried so many times to engage but it's not worth it. They barely have fully-formed beliefs -- it's just endless vendetta and obsession. pic.twitter.com/T7sBbRgpVx
  • 4 April 2022: 5/ She appears to have taken data provided by 8th through 11th graders and said "Let's assume that's the rate of vitcimization at all age levels," which seems pretty nuts. Obviously teenagers are much more likely to be sexually victimized than preteens. pic.twitter.com/aIFjvlD5kX
  • 4 April 2022 (live): 4/ As far as I can tell he is getting this 100x 'stat' from one researcher whose methods were scrutinized. I'll look more into this when I have time but it is just not credible given the sex difference in perpetration rates. pic.twitter.com/eOTw97lbfL
  • 4 April 2022 (live): 3/ Rufo is claiming that a group that is 67% female (teachers) commits sexual abuse at a MUCH higher rate than a group is 100% male (Catholic priests). I know you're not to say that this or that social science theory is 'impossible,' but this is pretty close. pic.twitter.com/81Gw9gCwY6
  • 4 April 2022 (live): 2/ If Chris is right it means Catholic priests are far kid-rapier than teachers pic.twitter.com/PD9s58cxDN
  • 4 April 2022 (live): Trouble with denominators pic.twitter.com/xaSduiLKBl
  • 31 March 2022: 3/ Folks who think this is fearmongering should at least watch this documentary. At one of the top hospitals in the world, there was a major coverup scandal involving blockers, with kids suffering major physical and psychological probelms. https://www.svtplay.se/video/33358590/uppdrag-granskning/mission-investigate-trans-children-avsnitt-1?position=689&id=jp9dBRA
  • 31 March 2022 (live): 2/ It's been very upsetting watching institution after institution, now including the Biden White House, sweep genuinely complicated bioethical disputes under the rug. You can oppose the proposed and enacted laws/policies in red states without exaggerating the evidence.
  • 31 March 2022 (live): U.S. versus U.K. governments on the question of whether puberty blockers should be seen as full-stop reversible pic.twitter.com/gybwsa2lgv
  • 28 March 2022: 2/ Plus politically won't it be impossible for anything BUT EU membership to ensue almost immediately?
  • 28 March 2022 (live): Isn't "giving up on joining NATO" way less painful when you know that for years to come, the entire West will shower you with hundreds of billions of dollars of whatever military equipment you need to allow you to bolster your defenses and prevent this from happening again? https://twitter.com/maxseddon/status/1508518460405526530
  • 28 March 2022: Guess I'll have to flip the GIF upside down
  • 28 March 2022 (live): Hey @kittypurrzog , just wanted to say: pic.twitter.com/tn8Erfdrrt
  • 27 March 2022: $1,400 for a single-use weapon easily hoistable by a single dude that can destroy tanks that are what, 2000x the cost? https://twitter.com/KimBenabib/status/1508140368637833218
  • 25 March 2022: Her: Why don't you want you? This makes me feel unattractive... Me: pic.twitter.com/gMILRmMMaj
  • 24 March 2022: 2/ Really good btw https://surviveaplague.com/
  • 24 March 2022: It might feel like Twitter is good for the brands of public intellectuals, but the benefits are often offset by outbursts like this: Why should I trust a Yale MPH who rants at "arrogant fucks" and and exclaims to gay men that he and his colleagues "saved your asses" from AIDS? pic.twitter.com/oy3qrD6E8b
  • 24 March 2022: The argument here seems to be that I erred in claiming NHJ, a journalist who has won the Pulitzer and MacArthur awards, not to mention countless others, has sufficient job security that she doesn't risk firing as a result of an online mob. That anyone could argue with this... https://twitter.com/shanenrhoades/status/1506745224248315907
  • 23 March 2022: What is the best evidence you've seen that this is the case other than many articles claiming it is?
  • 22 March 2022: Had a sense of how weird this stuff was getting when in ~2019 a highly regarded writer said on a listserv I was on that arguments against trans women competing as women reminded them of arguments against black people competing with white ones ¯_(ツ)_/¯ https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/we-should-be-celebrating-lia-thomas-we-did-jackie-robinson-ncna1292521
  • 20 March 2022: Politically-tinged Habanero catcalling pic.twitter.com/i3CJNycUF8
  • 18 March 2022: 3/ That being said obviously the average American of any race doesn't have strong feelings on "counter culture" or any other too-online stuff, but the point is there is zero polling to support the idea that general concern over this stuff is narrow and white. It's made-up.
  • 18 March 2022: 2/ You see this claim a lot but what's amazing about it is one of the groups LEAST likely to say this stuff is a concern is... liberal white people! It's just like an exact 180ing of the actual racial politics.
  • 18 March 2022: "At the same time, a full 84 percent of Black people polled shared the concern of this editorial that it was a “very serious” or “somewhat serious” problem that some Americans do not exercise their freedom of speech out of fear of retaliation or harsh criticism." https://twitter.com/drvolts/status/1504877988319404032
  • 18 March 2022: 3/ I have learned a lot from Adam's work and mean no broader disrespect but no normal person who isn't in too-online left-of-center circles can look at the reaction to this or the Harper's letter and say "Yup, this is sane an healthy stuff."
  • 18 March 2022: 2/ Anyway I'm in Havana and I'll make sure to see if Cubans share this outrage at the idea that it is bad to foster a culture of punishment for unpopular speech.
  • 18 March 2022: This view, that a relatively milquetoast editorial arguing the left has a free-speech problem (while denouncing "an even more extreme version of censoriousness" on the right) is such an indefensible act that it might warrant staff resignation, is dominant among lib media types. https://twitter.com/adamdavidson/status/1504808498646949889
  • 16 March 2022: 2/ I think it's basically privilege. It's hard for anyone born in the U.S. in the last very many years to imagine the widespread, full-blown suppression of free speech (notwithstanding disturbing outlying cases like J20). But thinks can change very quickly!
  • 16 March 2022 (live): Between Russia and China, ~1.5 billion people live in terrifying dystopias when it comes to the government's near-total ability to control and punish disfavored speech. It shocks me Americans are so blind to the dangers of giving government and tech more power on this front.
  • 15 March 2022: Why is such a jawdroppingly gorgeous city run by such loons?
  • 15 March 2022 (live): "San Francisco will not enter into contracts with businesses headquartered in most of the U.S. — 28 states in all. Official travel to those states is also forbidden. And this list includes some surprises: Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin." https://missionlocal.org/2022/03/san-francisco-is-now-boycotting-most-of-the-united-states/
  • 13 March 2022: 2/ If a right-wing outlet misrepresented a left-wing bill this badly, the Times and other outlets would rightly call it 'misinformation.' How is this different? Is it just that because this is a bad bill (from our perspective), it's okay for our outlets to misrepresent it?
  • 13 March 2022: First two paragraphs of a NYT column. Everyone knows this is false. Everyone knows there is nothing like this anywhere in the bill (the only part about sexual orientation refers explicitly to "classroom instruction," anyway). What is the point of this? pic.twitter.com/rSMCqkiKiM
  • 11 March 2022: Could someone email me a PDF of this? Not available via the Usual Methods. I'll delete this tweet after I have it, so please hit refresh before taking the time to grab it. Thank you so much. https://academic.oup.com/mind/advance-article-abstract/doi/10.1093/mind/fzab086/6541791?redirectedFrom=fulltext
  • 11 March 2022: If someone could email me a PDF of this I'd really appreciate it! I'll delete this tweet after I have it https://twitter.com/Rongwrong_/status/1502319537236099077
  • 11 March 2022: 30 Thing The Elden Ring Tutorial Doesn't Tell You About The History Of Russo-Ukrainian Relations
  • 11 March 2022: I wanna read this review -- does anyone have an archive link? https://twitter.com/Sean_OConnell/status/1501299749898567680
  • 11 March 2022: "At a minimum, courts ought to permit prohibitions on false information disseminated with reckless disregard for its falsity that materially influences people’s vaccination decisions. " This this through more. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama-health-forum/fullarticle/2790169
  • 10 March 2022: 4/ Historically, I think what happens when this many people are so aggressively wrong about an important subject is they just sorta slink away and try to bury their past writing/advocacy. Not a direct analogy but there wasn't much of a post-repressed-memory-panic reckoning
  • 10 March 2022 (live): 3/ @glaad : I should be on a list of anti-LGBT bigots because I said sexual abuse/other trauma can lead to gender concerns Major report to the NHS: Sexual abuse/other trauma can lead to gender concerns ¯_(ツ)_/¯ pic.twitter.com/RuMc76QhdL
  • 10 March 2022 (live): 2/ I remain a tad frustrated that those of us who pointed out stuff like what's in this chart experienced the blowback we experienced. We were reporting what clinicians themselves told us, and now groups like WPATH and the NHS are making it clear that yes, this is complicated. pic.twitter.com/a3rWuvurH3
  • 10 March 2022 (live): 1/ Looking forward to reading the interim report of the Cass Review, a major attempt to evaluate the NHS's youth gender-identity services and suggest improvements. https://cass.independent-review.uk/publications/interim-report/
  • 9 March 2022: 5/ Sorta speechless pic.twitter.com/FsAzLVJvb0
  • 9 March 2022 (live): 4/ "I am mad you tweeted about one thing instead of the other thing that I am just informing you about" https://twitter.com/JSidewinder1/status/1501579372192485381
  • 9 March 2022 (live): 3/ To date, this strategy of loudly broadcasting to ~90% of the population they are horrible anti-science bigots seems to be failing. On sports, for example, "the numbers are so bad they aren't included" in a Transgender Law Center report. Not normal! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxR78esqpEQ
  • 9 March 2022 (live): 2/ Stock is arguing that in some situations, biological sex should prevail over gender identity. This view is likely held by 90%+ of the population. What is the strategy of the activists, journalists, and academics trying to make it unsayable in liberal spaces? pic.twitter.com/GUNKSfsTBN
  • 9 March 2022 (live): 1/ This is so pathetic and such a prime example of the intellectual rot going on in my general backyard Resign in bombastic outrage over an article, and then 'predict' what it will be about. https://www.chronicle.com/article/the-essay-that-prompted-an-editorial-revolt pic.twitter.com/Vr49GDeUXg
  • 9 March 2022: Can I just say I'm fascinated by this?? According to a ton of people on Twitter, we should be skeptical of free-speech claims because there are SO MANY people demanding we debate the merits of slavery. And yet I've never met a single person who holds this belief! Huh.... https://twitter.com/bradwparr/status/1501372088795291650
  • 9 March 2022: North Dakota's proposed "Don't Say Podcaster" bill is unbelievable. Second graders ARE old enough to learn about podcasting. In today's economy it's an act of child abuse to deny them from this knowledge.
  • 8 March 2022: It literally takes more time to write a tweet like this than it would to just google https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Athefire.org+palestinian&rlz=1C1UEAD_enUS953US953&oq=site%3Athefire.org+palestinian&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i58.3376j0j9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 https://twitter.com/emmalineJen/status/1501274077025214465
  • 8 March 2022: 2/ When someone is being publicly shamed, this happens CONSTANTLY -- folks popping up to claim they lied about this and that. A lot of the time these claims are themselves false! If you have a huge following you need to be careful about casually spreading unvetted rumors.
  • 8 March 2022: One of the classmates of the author of that Times piece popped up and disputed one of her claims. I don't understand the point of Nikole Hannah-Jones inserting herself into this by retweeting that claim. Did she check it? Is it true? This makes the Times look dysfunctional. pic.twitter.com/zLi2vIFwsL
  • 8 March 2022: I know that she got to write for the Times, but, like... she's still a college student? I don't get the point of the performative cruelty from big-name journalists with massive platforms. What purpose does this serve? The pileon was pretty ugly and unwarranted. pic.twitter.com/GSIUyO0SZl
  • 7 March 2022: The old me would engage here but instead I'm just going to obnoxiously screencap and ask people to explain what sort of mental gymnastics could possibly connect what I wrote to Jeet's accusation pic.twitter.com/RjuAcJMc3F
  • 7 March 2022: I do not think SNL writers should steal jokes -- not even on Twitter! If you're gonna do it at least change a word or two. pic.twitter.com/H2ZQSwVChY
  • 5 March 2022: Wattch! https://twitter.com/CathyYoung63/status/1499975717727133704
  • 5 March 2022: You can't just acquire Nuance pic.twitter.com/zTGzcVDjOh
  • 4 March 2022: 2/ Not 'negative' ration but under 1 is what I meant
  • 4 March 2022 (live): 1. Random person with a negative following:follower ratio (both in the hundreds) expresses a silly but inconsequential opinion 2. One conservative account with 20k+ followers quote-retweets it 3. Another RTs the QRT This is how Twitter keeps everyone at everyone's throat pic.twitter.com/EOl5K2p0xF
  • 4 March 2022: Welp Don Lemon just said he thinks it's inevitable we'll have boots on the ground
  • 4 March 2022: There should be a term for this: viral Twitter threads of the form "A ton of people are saying X, but here's why they're wrong," where X is an argument most people haven't encountered until that thread. Feel like it happens a lot and partly explains the platform's badness. pic.twitter.com/9A2p42wsFX
  • 2 March 2022: This is a weird cousin of "musician accused of bad thing so we must immediately remove his entire catalogue" and is similarly stupid https://twitter.com/EASPORTSFIFA/status/1499057030857777154
  • 28 February 2022: 2/ I'm sure explains some of* the differences between how a European might react to different migrants. But the whole thing started with the leader of Europe's most powerful country announcing she was throwing open the doors to ME refugees! *can't deny religion also huge
  • 28 February 2022 (live): I am seeing oversimplified takes about how Europe was super hostile to Syrian/other Middle Eastern refugees. At first there were literally Germans lining the train stations to cheer and welcome them! It definitely went south later but it's more complicated than folks saying.
  • 28 February 2022: 2/ A TON of people say this with the breezy confidence of predicting the sun's rise tomorrow. Does it make much sense on its face? Can't it be that there are a million reasons to not involve US/NATO forces directly, but "Putin will instantly end the world" isn't a good one?
  • 28 February 2022: 1/ Genuine question: I agree that this tweet is a bit beyond what the experts see as a reasonably safe option. But a lot of people seem to be saying that if the U.S. or NATO attacked any Russian asset directly, Russia would instantly respond by ending humanity via nukes. https://twitter.com/RichardEngel/status/1498381591306981379

  • 27 February 2022: 2/ I guess that can change very quickly once the bodies pile up -- I'm just saying it seems like a very different sort of war versus ruthlessly slaughtering Syrians from thousands of miles away https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/02/russia-committed-war-crimes-in-syria-finds-un-report
  • 27 February 2022: I'm curious about this dynamic. Intuitively, it seems so much harder to rile up soldiers to harm civilians who are so linguistically/ethnically/geographically nearby. I'm obviously not saying such tribalism is good , but I think it's a thing https://twitter.com/RALee85/status/1497962806402064387
  • 26 February 2022: guyyyyyyyyyyyyys please just talk to some geopolitics experts or something I am all for criticizing illiberal tendencies in our institutions and have done so a lot but not everything is about this one thing https://twitter.com/HeatherEHeying/status/1497376585858498562

  • 25 February 2022: 4/ There's also an indication that she was already reprimanded at the institution (not UW) where she was when this took place: "We also recognize that this particular incident was largely handled administratively at another institution." Anyway, justice!
  • 25 February 2022: 3/ A lot of these overwrought, overly punitive responses are make-work for bureaucrats: "we are convening a series of affinity group meetings in the next few weeks to provide spaces for mutual support, reflection, and response (see Zoom link below)."
  • 25 February 2022: 2/Just to situate everyone, the event in question happened several years before the most recent instance of 30 Rock airing blackface-oriented comedy to tens of millions of people. What she did was a bad idea but at the time was obviously not seen as too risque even for network TV pic.twitter.com/BNTM4nsjM4
  • 25 February 2022: 1/ A U. Washington doctor who has dedicated her career to fighting HIV in Africa, including research w/sex workers, is having her reputation and career incinerated because she dressed up as Michael Jackson, in blackface, once in 2009. She faces an "intensive education process." pic.twitter.com/mMqzND6Nsw
  • 24 February 2022: In the U.S., a lot of people are under the misapprehension that they can bully and browbeat their way out of an actual discussion of the evidence here, but there are a lot of signs, including shifts in mainstream coverage, that that discussion is coming.
  • 24 February 2022 (live): Sweden is seriously tightening up access to puberty blockers and hormones for young people outside of medical settings, following in the footsteps of Finland and to a lesser extent the UK. https://genspect.org/breaking-sweden-drastically-changes-protocol-prioritizes-psychotherapy/

  • 23 February 2022: I feel like when people tweet stuff like this they don't understand that for all they know, the person they're tweeting at is suicidal. To be clear I'm not, but I just think this crosses a line. I dunno, maybe others disagree and think telling people to kill themselves is good https://twitter.com/crushbort/status/1496561098681729026
  • 23 February 2022: Can you point me to what I've written in support of banning youth gender care?
  • 23 February 2022: Nope, that's me. I stand by it. It includes the story of a couple teenagers who physically transitioned and whose lives got much better as a result -- the folks who would be harmed by these sorts of laws/acts in conservative sttes. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/07/when-a-child-says-shes-trans/561749/ https://twitter.com/adamszym/status/1496560667440160770
  • 23 February 2022: There are a lot of these vaguely threatening notes indicating that "blood is on my hands," I will be haunted by my views (meaning "Kids should be assessed before going on hormones" I suppose) and so on. The level of obsession, and frequently violent imagery, gets creepy. https://twitter.com/stiff_piques/status/1496551507684118531

  • 23 February 2022: 2/ Not only did I come out against bans, I even came out against hard age gaps -- a much more moderate policy. • 5 February 2022: This is very bad-faith. I'm editing an interview with Sachs, as we speak, where he talks about how certain forms of transparency -- posting curricula online -- are totally fine, while others -- allowing 'observers' IN THE CLASSROOM (!) -- aren't. Really out of context quote. https://twitter.com/realchrisrufo/status/1489759578464014337

  • 5 March 2021: 11/ But for the most part, it wasn’t a mess driven by malice. I do think the PPC routinely oversells its wares, including here, but at the end of the day CSF happened because good people tried to help a vulnerable group and simply didn't know how to rigorously evaluate evidence.
  • 5 March 2021: 10/ It shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s zero evidence that CSF, a mandatory Army program for over a decade, does anything to help soldiers. After all, there was never a strong theoretical rationale for the program. The whole thing was just a mess.
  • 5 March 2021: 9/ Third, in designing CSF, Seligman and his colleagues added to the general PRP formula all sorts of other stuff from the positive psychology world that has even less evidence behind it. That means “PRP works, so CSF will” is an even weaker claim than it would be otherwise.
  • 5 March 2021: 8/ Second, even if there were stronger evidence for PRP, for obvious reasons you can’t jump from “This program prevents depression and anxiety in 10-14-year-old students in general school settings” to “This program prevents PTSD and suicide in 18+ -year-olds in combat zones.”
  • 5 March 2021: 7/ It openly questioned “whether PRP’s effects on depressive symptoms lead to clinically meaningful benefits for its participants.” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4667774/ So the progenitor and basis of CSF, PRP, was not itself validated as clinically useful.
  • 5 March 2021: 6/ But CSF was the stretchiest of behavioral-scientific stretches for multiple reasons. First, as CSF was being implemented, a major meta-analysis of PRP came out, coauthored by its creator. It found statistically significant results, but small ones:

  • 27 December 2020: 4/ BTW same thing sparked the insane meltdown that overtook this theater company. Someone asked a/b a snippet of a script that included the word, this was treated as equivalent to using it as a slur, so they brought in Robin DiAngelo to educate everyone. https://barpodcast.fireside.fm/bonus2
  • 27 December 2020 (live): 3/ This also ignores the fact that this is, unfortunately, how a subset of teenagers talk online, regularly. It's nonblack people trying to use the word the way black people do. Which is bad! But it's clearly a different and less derogatory usage, which matters in this case.
  • 27 December 2020 (live): 2/ If you're white, just don't ever say the word -- that's easy! She fucked up. But she was 15 and was imitating a style in which it means roughly 'dude' or 'motherfucker,' as is evident from the context. I don't understand why the story completely ignores that.

  • 1 December 2019: It's pretty crazy that Scientific American took this article down. I'm seeing more and more of this -- editors yanking stuff, in a rather cowardly manner, because of Twitter bullshit -- and it's very bad for journalism. https://twitter.com/jessesingal/status/1200102178003836929
  • 19 November 2019: I made no comment about ROGD. My comment is in reference to the ridiculous claim that it is easy to study cohorts of kids with gender dysphoria over time, when it's notoriously difficult for a half dozen reasons. https://twitter.com/e_urq/status/1196646776305905664
  • 19 November 2019 (live): 4/ Anyway, here's my thing on accuracy vs rightside norms. I do think this general model explains a lot of what's going on in journalism, though I'm sure someone has said it better somewhere else. https://jessesingal.substack.com/p/rightside-norms-accuracy-norms-and?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&utm_source=twitter
  • 19 November 2019: 3/ It's also kinda crazy to say "Why don't they just study supposedly ROGD kids directly?" when a very provisional study based on surveying parents of some of them launched a protracted politicized shitstorm. Not really good faith. In conclusion, :( :( :( :(
  • 19 November 2019: 2/ Because this is an area where rightside norms have completely trounced accuracy norms, you can get stuff wrong over and over and over, while never doing the journalistic legwork of devleoping sources, reading, etc., and still get treated as a journalistic authority. It's bad.
  • 19 November 2019: Old article, but a professional writer at Slate, treated as an authority on this issue, wants commenters there to know that "It's just not that hard" to study cohorts of gender dysphoric youth over time. This couldn't be wronger. Consistently at a loss for words on this subject. pic.twitter.com/B0TWB0sjPM

  • 13 December 2018 (live): 3/ much about effect size. IAT research, along with various other types of sexy behavioral-science findings, are simply held to a much lower level of evidence than they should be. Experts should be careful in how they communicate this sort of finding.
