Trying to create a certain value using types from scalaz-6.0.3 leads to compiler crash. Here's the log:
{code}exlevan@reisen> scala -cp ~/.m2/repository/org/scalaz/scalaz-core_2.9.1/6.0.3/scalaz-core_2.9.1-6.0.3.jar
Welcome to Scala version 2.9.2-unknown-unknown (OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM, Java 1.6.0_24).
Type in expressions to have them evaluated.

Cut down a bit:

object Test {
  trait NT[X]
  trait W[W, A] extends NT[Int]
  type StringW[T] = W[String, T]
  trait K[M[_], A, B]

  def k[M[_], B](f: Int => M[B]): K[M, Int, B] = null

  val okay1: K[StringW,Int,Int] = k{ (y: Int) => null: StringW[Int] }
  val okay2 = k[StringW,Int]{ (y: Int) => null: W[String, Int] }

  val crash: K[StringW,Int,Int] = k{ (y: Int) => null: W[String, Int] }

  // remove `extends NT[Int]`, and the last line gives an inference error
  // rather than a crash.
  // test/files/pos/t5683.scala:12: error: no type parameters for method k: (f: Int => M[B])Test.K[M,Int,B] exist so that it can be applied to arguments (Int => Test.W[String,Int])
  //  --- because ---
  // argument expression's type is not compatible with formal parameter type;
  //  found   : Int => Test.W[String,Int]
  //  required: Int => ?M[?B]
  //   val crash: K[StringW,Int,Int] = k{ (y: Int) => null: W[String, Int] }

Superficial fix:

https://github.com/retronym/scala/compare/ticket/5683

Things seem to go wrong in elimHigherOrderTypeParam:

ts0 = List(Test.NT[X], Test.NT[Int])
ts0 map elimHigherOrderTypeParam = List(Test.NT, Test.NT[Int])
private def lubList(ts: List[Type], depth: Int): List[Type] = {
    // Matching the type params of one of the initial types means dummies.
    val initialTypeParams = ts map (_.typeParams)
    def isHotForTs(xs: List[Type]) = initialTypeParams contains xs.map(_.typeSymbol)

    def elimHigherOrderTypeParam(tp: Type) = tp match {
      case TypeRef(pre, sym, args) if args.nonEmpty && isHotForTs(args) => tp.typeConstructor
      case _                                                            => tp
    }

Fixed, as in, it doesn't crash anymore.

It sort of fumbles its way to an inference failure, but as it's unlikely that that type will be inferred anytime soon (#2712), we can live with that for now.
