No idea how easy this will be. As far as I'm aware its just pdf that is exposed to the web, not the latex or whatever is underneath. Would be worth contacting the bioRxiv team about though.

bioRxiv only accepted PDF upload when I submitted my preprint. let's test turning it into something decent:

... not a great result.

The main problem is that the PDFs landing in bioRxiv are completely unconstrained - they can come from any software, and some PDF generation is much more terrible than others.

Also note that this is one reason why bioRxiv is a considerable step backwards in terms of preprint technology. Compared to the arXiv it's unusable for anything except reading on their website or downloaded PDF. PeerJ preprints is a huge leap forward on the other hand.

I think the ASAPbio initiative is going to be extremely important.

@nickschurch @blahah super supportive of this! i've been working with the bioRxiv team, definitely true that it's currently just PDFs, but we're currently planning on generating XML for both new and possibly existing content, so might be worth doing this once that's in motion?

@freeman-lab that's great news! As soon as it becomes technically possible let's do this :)
