Bonjour,

When i subscribe to this feed :
http://radio3.io/users/davewiner/rss.xml

i do get RSS Cloud notifications via rsscloud.io :

http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/viewLog

All good. Birds are singing.

But when i subscribe to http://scripting.com/rss.xml, while i do get the OK from subscribing to it via rsscloud.io (as seen on the Log http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/viewLog, see attached screenshot), i never get pings.

Can you check that rsscloud.io is pinged when you post to the blog?

Thank you,
JY

JY, thank you for this report. I believe I am now pinging when http://scripting.com/rss.xml is updated, however it's not showing up in the log on rsscloud.io. I still have more problems to look for apparently. ;-)

Update: I moved my code to the real server instead of localhost and now the updates are showing up on the rsscloud.io server. JY are you seeing them?

No not yet. (it would not be fun, would it??)

I'd looking at my log for the next updates.

the rsscloud.io log is showing a few items only, not easy to look for pings in the last n minutes/last hour.

I don't know if that can be related.

But i just noticed after you posted the last post "About feeds-in-JSON" that it has :

which is about 30 min ago.

looks to me that you only published it a couple minutes ago.

more like the date i see in:

it's 15:46 GMT when i post this.

could there be a bogus server time somewhere? which would fail a check from the rsscloud server to see if there is indeed something new?
i don't think so, but just in case..

These dates were from reading http://scripting.com/rss.xml

But i checked the rsscloud.io code, the code checks an md5 of the feed, or its size, to decide if it really updated. so it is not checking dates at all.

so that must be unrelated.

Hoopla! I will take a look and see if there is anything odd on my end. I've been wanting to revamp viewLog for a while, but haven't had the time.

@andrewshell maybe you could, if possible, show more log items on the Log page, as a first step. A few hundreds.. So i could find the scripting.com/rss.xml pings, and correlate their date/time to notifications i'd get on my side. I've not seen any ping for SN on the Log page for now.

I just pushed out an updated version. I've replaced the storage of the log from JSON in the filesystem to a sqlite3 database. It will basically keep all logs at this point. However, it now started the log from scratch. It also should be getting updates live via web sockets so you should see log events coming in as they happen.

This is the first step. Ideally, I'll be adding better interaction with the log like being able to filter by your feed or river.

Hope this helps.

There was an error happening during pings, but I'm not sure if that was an old error or not. I've updated my local logs to include timestamps so I'll have a better idea when that happens. It's a weird error I've been unable to reproduce on my end.

@andrewshell thank's for the changes :)

For filtering, i'll just use:

$ curl -s http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/viewLog | grep scripting

We're getting a little further, but still the ping is not showing up in the server's log.

I added a field to the log that shows the response from the server. Here's an example of a log entry.

{
"urlFeed": "http://scripting.com/rss.json",
"urlServer": "http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/ping",
"when": "Wed, 31 May 2017 14:05:21 GMT",
"code": 200,
"body": "\n<result success="false" msg="The following parameters were missing from the request body: url."/>"
},

As you can see, it's saying there is no "url" parameter in the request body.

The code I'm using for the ping is what I've been using all along.

function cloudPing (urlServer, urlFeed, callback) {
var outgoingData = {
url: urlFeed
};
var rq = {
uri: urlServer,
body: querystring.stringify (outgoingData)
};
request.post (rq, function (err, res, body) {
if (callback !== undefined) {
callback (err, res, body);
}
});
}

I added some debugging code to show what's in rq.

cloudPing: rq == {
"uri": "http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/ping",
"body": "url=http%3A%2F%2Fscripting.com%2Frss.json"
}

It looks like the body has a url param.

Can you try with:

var outgoingData = { url: urlFeed };

var rq = { uri: urlServer, form: outgoingData };

i'm getting the notifications too :-D

it looks like the difference between body and form is that the second one is adding the right Content-type:

https://github.com/request/request

body - entity body for PATCH, POST and PUT requests. Must be a Buffer, String or ReadStream. If json is true, then body must be a JSON-serializable object.

form - when passed an object or a querystring, this sets body to a querystring representation of value, and adds Content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded header. When passed no options, a FormData instance is returned (and is piped to request). See "Forms" section above.

One more thing before I close the issue, I'm turning off the log. If I don't I'm going to forget to do it, and remember when the file is 25GB and my Amazon bill is through the roof. ;-)

I'm getting errors renewing both Scripting News feeds.

http://linode.scripting.com:1337/feedstats

You can see the errors by searching for scripting.com/rss.xml and scripting.com/rss.json

I added a bit more debugging code so we will actually see the error messages when there is an error.

I stepped through the process manually with Postman and found that when I POST to http://linode.scripting.com:1337/ping with a parameter url that equals http://scripting.com/rss.xml

I receive a 403 Forbidden with the body "This feature can only be accessed locally."

Since it's the only kind of pleaseNotify I can test without spoofing an IP address I did a pleaseNofify request with the domain specified and it said it worked.

What I did:

POST to http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/pleaseNotify with the following parameters as form-urlencoded data.

port=1337
path=/feedupdated
url1=http://scripting.com/rss.xml
protocol=http-post

Response:

<notifyResult success="true" msg="Thanks for the registration. It worked. When the resource updates we'll notify you. Don't forget to re-register after 24 hours, your subscription will expire in 25. Keep on truckin!"/>

Followup on this thread.

 1. The problem was that the <cloud> element in the Scripting News feed had the wrong path value.

 2. Then I found another problem -- River5 would only update the cloud info for the feed when it found a new item in the feed. I changed it so that it updates it every time the feed is read.

 3. I did an update to Scripting News, and the ping was processed by rsscloud.io and the notification was received by my River5 installation.

I am reopening this thread once again! :-)

I'm getting two pings in rapid succession when I update Scripting News

It's causing River5 to read the feed twice, and posts end up appearing twice.

I should probably defend against this, but I'm curious why I'm getting two pings.

The feed in question is http://scripting.com/rss.xml.

Also I'm getting zero pings for the JSON version of the feed.

Is there some chance you're mistaking a ping on the JSON feed for a ping on the XML feed?

Its url is http://scripting.com/rss.json

It's probably my fault. Yesterday while we were debugging I tested subscribing to notifications with the domain parameter. So rssCloud-server probably has two entries for you, one for domain and one for IP address.

mmm ok, got it, and i see it in my log too.

But something weird : as http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/viewLog shows (and my own log too), i got all the 9 last posts notifications in the last minutes, from posts even 2 days old.

Did you blow in a pipe or something, were they blocked in the cyberinterwebs? :)

But something weird : as http://rpc.rsscloud.io:5337/viewLog shows (and my own log too), i got all the 9 last posts notifications in the last minutes, from posts even 2 days old.

That's not exactly how it works. The ping just means "hey this thing changed, read it."

And when your software reads it, it discovers N new items, and they go in your river.

His server might have been up all the time, it's possible that yours wasn't hearing for some reason.

But it's a mystery that will probably never be resolved!

 1. it can be on yours, Andrew's or mine :)

Do you still have the code that logged the pings (and HTTP reply) you send to Andrew's server?

Ping The resource was said to have changed. We checked and the claim appears to be true. 5:52PM 0.231

Ok so the pings go threw.

Notify Subscriber [::ffff:104.200.XX.XXX]:1337 was notified that resource has changed via http: protocol. 5:52PM 0.028

A couple URL's are notified.

Not mine.

So it miiiiiiiiight be a problem on my side.. Let's check if the daily (< 24h) resubscribing still works...
