I started working on using Lua to load in items to redis. I have an import of over 21,000 items (with pretty long names) to soulmate, and after I switching to the Lua implementation my import time dropped from 78 seconds to 30 seconds.
This isn't ready to pull yet though for a couple reasons. Redis 2.6 isn't officially out yet, which is the first version that supports Lua scripting. Also, I want to utilize Lua for searching. I'm sure that won't provide as dramatic a speed boost as using it for importing, but nevertheless, every millisecond counts.

I definitely think this is a good idea once 2.6 has been out for a bit, thanks for getting started. I played around with scripting in soulmate when @antirez first blogged about it, so I'm glad to see scripting finally making into redis proper.
