Der ehemalige deutsche Finanzminister Peer Steinbrück sprach 2011 in einer Bundestagsrede inmitten der Eurokrise davon, dass es einer „neuen Erzählung über Europa brauche“, um eine EU-Skepsis und einen Rückzug auf nationale Geschichten zu verhindern. Steinbrück postulierte dabei ein Versäumnis der politischen Eliten, die es verpasst hätten, den Menschen eine neue Erzählung über Europa anzubieten. Der Fokus liegt hier auf „der Politik“ als erzählende Akteurin, die Bevölkerung hat die Rolle des Publikums, das Europa-Erzählungen rezipiert, annimmt und verinnerlicht. Aus dem Blick gerät dabei, dass über Europa und die EU in alltäglichen Kontexten erzählt wird, in einer Dichte, die über den Bedeutungsgewinn sozialer Medien erst so richtig deutlich geworden ist. Narrative über Europa, ob sie sich positiv oder negativ, euphorisch oder skeptisch zu Prozessen der Europäisierung und der europäischen Integration verhalten, sind Alltag und sind nicht ohne weiteres durch lancierte Erzähl-Angebote der Politik zu beeinflussen oder gar zu kontrollieren. Das Seminar diskutiert solche Narrative über Europa in verschiedenen Kontexten – im Alltag, in den (sozialen) Medien und in der Politik – und fragt dabei nach den Verbindungen und Differenzen zwischen diesen verschiedenen Ebenen. Neben konzeptuellen und theoretischen Aspekten werden insbesondere auch methodische Fragen Thema sein: Wie forscht man über Narrative über Europa?
