  • [ X] I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Bug Description

Previously archived messages sometimes unarchive themselves, without any new message activity in the given thread. Note that this is not the same as #11587 which dealt with messages unarchiving themselves on receipt of new messages. This appears to exclusively affect Signal Desktop and not the Android client.

This appears to occur regardless of whether I am using Signal Desktop from another device or not, but seems to be more easily reproduced when I have Signal Desktop installed on multiple machines.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Archive all of your messages with Signal Desktop on machine X;
  2. Open Signal Desktop on machine Y;

Actual Result: Some (but not all) previously archived messages unarchive themselves.
Expected Result: I expected archived threads to not resurrect themselves without additional correspondence.

Platform Info

Signal Version: 5.20.0

Operating System: Ubuntu Hirsute (amd64)

Linked Device Version: 5.24.14 (Android)

Link to Debug Log

I haven't included the debug log because I am not sure whether it might contain sensitive information or if it would even be helpful for this issue.

Without a debug log, I'm going to close this. If you see this again, please reopen and provide a debug log. Thanks!

Unfortunately, I have basically the same error. Too bad this thread has been closed.

When I archive a chat in Signal Desktop, it will sometimes be moved back to the chat list a few seconds later, i.e. the message will be unarchived. This does not happen with all chats, but with some. Repeatedly archiving the chat results in the same behavior. This means that some chats cannot be archived at all, but remain in the chat list. This seems to only affect Signal Desktop and not the Android client.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Click on a chat on the left side below "Chats".
  2. Click on the menu icon at the top right (three dots) and select "Archive".

Actual result:

Initially, the chat on the left-hand side disappears, but reappears a few seconds later.

Expected result:

I was expecting archived chats to only reappear when new messages are received for the respective chat.

Platform information:

Signal version: 6.38.0
Operating system: Windows 10

I have a debug log, but prefer not to post it publicly. Please let me know how I can send you the debug log confidentially.

@lbltls, I'm actually experiencing the same problem daily too. I notice it only happens on Signal Desktop. I'm using version 6.38.0 on Ubuntu Jammy.

@kiplingw We are not able to do anything here without a debuglog. As a general guidance, debuglogs are heavily redacted and designed to be posted publicly.
