Opening this just to get the ball rolling. I'm trying to use this on mac and I think I'm succeeding with these changes but the cmdline part seems a bit sketchy, I haven't looked into it much. In any case as you probably guessed,, I have a mac so I can try out things on my machine.

The changes on where to find cmdline_tools looks more correct after your changes.
ie. After installing latest cmdline-tools via Android Studio, I see it's placed it here: J:\Android\Sdk\cmdline-tools\latest\bin\d8.bat

If you've tested the automatic finding of the Android Studio install path on your machine, then I'm happy to merge this in.

Yes, I managed to build an apk using this project on mac. It didn't install since it complained about wrong architecture of the native libraries (even though it's actually correct) but this is unrelated.
